my road bike has mavic open pros laced to Chris King hubs, lovely wheels that roll so smoothly
gotta love the angry been noise!

^ another reason to go handbuilt!

also, may be worth considering the hope pro3 hubs if you go handbuilt, it all depends on rim depth, spoke count, your weight, intended use, and whether you want a tub or a clinches'

First thing to say is thanks everyone for your input. Was thinking about Ksyriums or similar as I haven't had/tried this kind of thing before, I do have two pairs of fairly decent handbuilt road wheels, Goldtec road hubs laced to Open Pros and Hope road hubs laced to DT Swiss R1.1s , both quite nice, was just wondering if I could improve on them, beginning to think maybe not. I did think of building a set of wheels around Tune, DT Swiss or Chris King hubs but not sure the improvement would justify the extra expense.
Need to be Shimano compatible as I'll be using with a SRAM Force groupo and already have a couple of compatible cassettes. Not overly worried about the wheels being compliant for comfort as the frame will be a Cannondale Synapse, which will take care of this side of things, do want something that will remain true and idealy with minimum rim mass, so will be light, so I presume good for climbing. Not overly worried about having a deep aero profile and not overly keen on carbon rims.
So am now thinking either, stick with what I've got, go for DT Swiss hubs laced to R1.1 rims or a pair of Mavic Ksyrium SLs. Though I'm also kind of tempted by these probably not wise as a bit gimmicky/umproven, but still tempting. Will keep you posted on how I get on :)

Not sure why I thught you were after campy compatible.
Those Ergos are pretty sexy looking, but at 1450g for the pair, not amazingly light.
The guy MrsBulcher recommended does a pair of 28/32 on IRD Niobium Cadence rims, that are claimed to be 1350g. Most importantly those rims have a claimed weight of 390g, so next to feck all rotational mass.
(PS. Cheers MrsBulcher, I've been keeping an eye out for a source for those rims, bookmarked :) )

My Ksyrium SL rear sits in a wheel bag, unused most of the time, since I run a Powertap rear instead.
They do look very nice on a Tarmac S-Works though. :) -

Personally, i would go for DT's, for longetivety, service-a-bility, and general loveleness!

Look interesting. 1377g the pair.

Seem to be cheaper in the US, £525 here
http://www.ekmpowershop6.com/ekmps/shops/pcycles/novatec-sprint-wheelset---lightweight-climbing-wheels-129-p.asp(they use standard Sapim Lazer spokes, so servicable from the comfort of your own home)

BTW. If your building a rear wheel with an asymmetric rim (OCR). Is it still OK to lace radial non-drive, 3x drive side. I cant see why not, but it would a shame to loose any extra strengh given by the OCR rim, due to bad lacing choices.

IRD Cadence rims, made of Niobium, around 390grams each, Royce hubs and DT Swiss spokes.
If you want something aero then go for IRD Aero rims, they claim the lightest and strongest deep V rim on the market.
To look good, go for the DT Swiss Aerolite spokes...in white...nice!

I couldn't find a thread dedicated to road wheels, so here we are...
I'm looking to replace my 4 year old Mavic Aksiums, preferably before I depart on a cycling holiday mid-May. I thought I had found a set perfect for me, and despite ordering back in Feb, it seems the shipment is never going to arrive. The ''Due date' got pushed back from the start of April, to end of May...
Unless I'm missing something, these seem like excellent value for money.
I'd say my max budget is £350. Can anyone recommend me anything similar? I'm not looking for deep aero rims, I'd rather these wheels (somewhat) benefit me more on climbs...Oh and they need to be campag compatible (sorry Hippy)
Thanks.

Hand-built wheels: Priceless.
Oh, and I'll build 'em for you for some beers.

Bit of chatter here..
http://www.lfgss.com/thread40596.htmlI had Scherrit rebuild my wired Powertap onto a DT Swiss R520 rim. 30mm. Nice.

the carcon laminate doesn't do much but aroung 1500g for pair, at the top of your budget but just as good as the dura ace wheelset

Hippy, you really have a powertap??
-
• #47
reynolds do a nice alloy wheelset at about 1500grms called the attack

Actually I have three.

Because he generates so much force that just one is not enough.
+1 on Ksyrium SLs.
