• can you use iphone without itunes?

I detest itunes.

• can you use iphone without itunes?

I detest itunes.

nup. needs iTunes (which really annoys a lot of windows users).

• It annoys mac users too.

• HTC everytime & a great site for help is http://forum.xda-developers.com/index.php?

• I just got an iphone with a lovely 30% off line rental deal, which means I got the 16gb one for a song, I'm pretty sure, that apple will update iphone, and if they do, I'll be straight down to o2, asking for an upgrade.
but best to think of an iphone as a itsy bitsy computer, rather than a phone, I seem to spend more time, checking emails, and changing my facebook status, than actually ringing or texting people, though I've started texting more now.
I've got macs, hate pc's - use them at work and I hate every minute of it, and used to use nokia's until my n95 caused me to hate it so much I wanted to destroy the world just so I could be rid of it.

The fact that you posted a help forum before recommendations for cool apps etc is exactly why you shouldn't get an HTC or any winmob phone!

• Maybe have a look at the new HTC magic :http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/shop/mobile-phone/htc-magic

Runs Google Android, which is an open source operating system from Google competing with Windows Mobile, iPhone, Symbian and the rest of them.

• i had a older htc on wm6 then replaced it with an iphone.

iphone def wins, and i am usually anti apple. it's easy to jailbreak and so it is not necessarily tied shitty bloated itunes.

• well, im gonna get a iphone.

im gonna try and get one today without having to pay the upfront price. im not too bothered about a new version coming out, you can spend forever waiting for the next big release, and i need a phone right now already.

after some time spent using the diamond, i would say it is certainly a nice piece of hardware. but the software is a bit awkward and slow. its a shame really becuase i probably would have ended up with it had it been a bit nicer to use.

It is a help forum, but also a great site for Apps, upgrading/development, accessories, themes/wallpapers. You could get an I-phone or you could get something different, stand out from the crowd.

• i got the iphone and am very glad i did. its so nice to use, and i feel i got a good deal. i got me my usual phone, and a 16gb ipod strapped to it.

getting somthing just stand out from the crowd is silly. i want a phone thats easy to use, reliable, and has good features. i dont need it to make a statement about me, thats for idiot posuers who want to hold more social currentcy. its even more ridiculous to choose a less capable phone just to be diffrent.

• iphones are the shit

• the new software upgrade will solve the text input issues allowing the horizontal keyboard interface on other apps...

I think the waiting for new versions is something you could be doing with apple constantly... also if they follow suit as last time they will let you resign another 18 months and get the new one for free... so really nothing lost.

I have had version 1 and 2 and i think they are great for what they do....the only letdown i think is that the phone could be better for phonecalls...

• what about Flash or Java? Wouldn't that be kind of useful?

• roll on iphone linux.

• dude i am using an htc touch hd which i have tweaked for my own purposes. i agree with andy about win mob6.1 being buggy as a midge storm but i will say with a bit of understanding and some tweaking ie : update rom and drop off dead weight apps it works really well for me. the touch hd is an outstanding piece of hardware and pretty upgradeable. there are currently some uber geeks working on getting android totally functional for touch hd which will be mega.

i had an iphone before this and sold it because it drove half mad for a number of reasons. the first and most important being battery life, i literally couldnt leave my house without a charger or booster pack, i didnt like being tied to apple and the app store and there are just way too many fanboys out there.

imo open source is the way forward but beware of being an early adoptor as you will get the base issues, for example, the g1 is a 'cheap' piece of hardware (also manufactured by htc) but android is a winner. the diamond 2 runs in a very similair fashion to the touch hd and also uses touch flo 3d which is nice but merely gloss for the win mob 6.1.

also go onto the xda developers forum and red up about the htc phones and what they offer.
good luck.

• I think there are a lot to iPhone fanboys out there for a reason to be honest. I know the Diamond is not bad, and it depends why you're thinking about something else, but the iPhone really is a fantastic product. And it's so easy to use. Sometimes being different for the sake of being different is indeed silly.

• open source is certainly nice, but when it comes to phones, i just want the thing to work without too much of my time and effort. i like to tweak my computers and i dont mind them being complicated, but phones and mp3 players should just work.

the battery is going to be a bit of pain in the ass. ive got two chargers, one for home, one for my bag. i dont really mind too much though. the call quality is alot better than my old sony which is nice.

• i think it has alot to do with personal preference. i agree with the whole dare to be different debate, but the fanboys negate that theory rather nicely. apple has made some fantastic products and by the same token some rather spectacular white elephants. sometimes life just imitates art and vice versa... congrats on your new phone dude and i hope it gives you many happy hours of phonage.

the touch HD is possibly the nicest bit of hardware i've seen. it's fricking excellent, and as soon as someone gets Android running (and stable) on it, then it will be brilliant.

I am a fan of HTC hardware but I hate WinMo, which pretty much kills any chance of me using any of those phones (the Samsung Omnia is another example of decent hardware shackled to WinMo and pretty much sucking because of it).

imo open source is the way forward but beware of being an early adoptor as you will get the base issues, for example, the g1 is a 'cheap' piece of hardware (also manufactured by htc) but android is a winner. the diamond 2 runs in a very similair fashion to the touch hd and also uses touch flo 3d which is nice but merely gloss for the win mob 6.1.

I don't know why HTC apparently didn't bother using any proper industrial design when it built the G1. it feels like a prototype to me, that accidentally got made into a real product. the Magic looks much better, but i have become a fan of physical keyboards, which it lacks.

Also there will be Android phones from Samsung, LG and Motorola (if it survives that long) by the end of the year.

There has been a lot of buzz about Android being based on Linux. this is kindof true, but irrelevant because the application environment runs in Dalvik, which is (roughly) Google's reverse-engineered version of Java. So from an application developer (and user) perspective, there is nothing Linux about Android.

• i don't understand the fanboy thing. they're just phones. pick the one that you like best and don't worry about it. they all have different strengths and weaknesses, none of them is perfect.

• I wrote a review of the HTC Magic (with latest version of Android) in case anyone is thinking of buying one: http://theplatform.wordpress.com/2009/04/29/htc-magic-review/

• iPhone FTW, especially with the 3.0 software update that's coming this summer.
They still leave every other phone miles behind!

• iPhone all the way baby

• i disagree with you, Donut!, but I know better than to argue with an Apple devotee.
