the way i got around the baggage sizing and sports equipment restrictions when i flew to the states was putting the frame in bag and then putting the wheelset in abox cut to size. clothes etc went into these. I got questioned by one jobsworth and just said they were personal items.
This time i'm flying with Air NZ who let who take a bike as apiece of luggage and allow an extra 10kg!
