we got nothing to be proud about any more, a nation on the down turn should be allowed to celebrate it's make believe founder.
if we were a super power it would be seen as gloating, if we were a nation of bog trotting spud munchin fantical religous alcoholics the world would join in with us... but we are in the middle.
I am proud to be English but don't feel the need for a special day to get rinsed by the shops to celebrate it. that and i hate those flags!!!
i disagree. we as a country are not integrating immigrants properly, due in part to our lack of strong culture. i envy the americans, even first generation immigrants call themselves american, and are proud to be american. here, it takes 2-3 generations for that to happen, and even then you won't get many going round saying they're 'proud to be english'.
i feel the lack of proper national identity over here is a big problem which should be addressed. it probably stems from WW2, the idea that nationalism is bad and only leads to bad things. so what happens is, we get hundreds of different communities which evolve all over the country, who keep to themselves and don't integrate because they don't feel there is anything to integrate with.
a national day of celebration, even if it doesn't relate to st. george, is something we as a country should be proud to partake in. every other country in the world manages it, why can't we?
oh, and we do have something to be proud of as a country : music!
