There's only one longish downhill on DD anyway. Getting a road bike to ride it is a sure sign of weakness and probable impending death from girlsblouseitis.
Exaclty. HTFU and learn to spin. Last week I did 3 laps of Richmond Park on fixed, and 3 laps on the geared bike. My fastest speed was 53.2kph on the fixed compared to 52.5kph on the geared bike. At 200rpm I'd be doing 64.6kph, plenty enough if only I could get my spin-fu going. As for hills:-

The dude on the right looks like he is auditioning for a part in a 80s pop band.
Seriously though impressive time.

22.1 miles yesterday. Bromley to Canary Wharfe...round to the northside of Tower Bridge...lunch at Southbank and back again. Nothing insane, then i did only buy the fixed on Friday!
Looking to increase that to 30 next week, 35 the week following...and then may try London to Brighton in a month or so.

How many other members smoke?
I was actually surprised at the large number who do, before moving here a few months back i'd never anyone who cycled regularly and smoked, but probably about a third of the guys i've met do.

Pathologically compensatory behaviour for the lack of an exhaust pipe on a bike and consequent pollution.

I bet Freud would have something interesting to say on this along the lines of these cyclists' envy of cars.

I only smoke cos everyone else does and it makes me look cool. Plus I get to show off to my road club members just how alternative I am and leave them in shock and awe

I smoke, it's very important to have the cigarette pack showing in the back pocket when you pass roadies uphill.

200k on a brakeless pursuit bike for a breve in Augusta, Ga two years ago. It hurt. Allot.
-
• #169
wow, that's impressive! the longest ride I have ever done was 190k and that was on a geared bike...
-

Yeah...I don't recommend it. I'm not a fantastic rider to begin with, and that was a very long day for me.
The thing is, that I don't have a very good grasp on kilometers, so you can tell me any number and I still think it's about fifty miles and that I'll be fine. -

Yes, I think you should stick with miles. There's always fewer of them than of kilometres.

Which is why it's better to use kays for your distance and speed measurement.
I did 200 at 30 sounds better than 120 at 20. :)
