I had a smaller tip and bigger shaft... :-)
... so don't know what your solution would be... I'd guess to get a smaller drill bit and bolt?
Although I remeber you saying you were worried about it, did you try? Did it snap? Because I think you'd find it's not that big a problem... maybe someone with more mallet building experience (particularly with ski poles) will be able to help?
