  • don't listen to dammit, he uses his chin

  • I would say that is only really helpful if you are skidding for fun/distance/looks/whatever, to stop you want to keep your weight as central as possible, rather than skid for as long as possible, which is what will happen if you move your weight that far forward, but everything else there is good advice.

True - it was really tips to start a skid, as that seemed to be the problem!

+1.. better to learn the easy way and progress into doing it a bit further back

  • tell me you're not riding with flat pedals and a hi-vi?
    both stop you doing skids.

  • Fair point, I guess it'll help in learning to progress to using it to stop quickly.

  • Surely this is another wind up thread?

I bought a football the other day but not sure what to do with it. Is it true you have to kick it? I don't know how, having a bit of trouble.....

  • No Graham, apparently you have to step forward with your front foot and then follow with your back foot, honestly.. hipster footballers these days......

  • ....Oh I see. Apparently one can also do tricks with it too?

How was the ruby last night mate?

  • Most satisfying thank you mate, it was a good night all round, although the surprise/accidental detour on the way back was pretty funny, all round though it was a really good night out :).

  • Good one. You got lost on the way back?

  • Not quite lol, erm to put it simply, some people went bombing off about to go onto the A12 I shit it and was like nooooooo slow down guys thats a fucking dual carriage way, went past the cycle route turn off, I thought there was a foot bridge slightly further ahead to get back off the A12.....but there wasn't, and we ended up walking down the A12 for a while!

  • I've ben practicing exactly the same thing this week - yes I do have a front brake! and I found it easier to skid down hills, for obvious reasons...

  • Get yourself down Brockwell Park in the wet, go like stink dwn the hill from the house to the gates, best way to practice skids

  • You normally learn to skid, when someone pulls out in front of you.
Instinct kicks in, lock your legs and prey!

  • I just bought myself my first fixed gear bike.
    And i'm having trouble braking.
I've tried locking my legs but i cant get the wheels to stop turning.
They just force my legs around.
    Any ideas why ?

    Thanks

what type of jeans are you wearing?

looking around on the net and stuff it seems that skinny jeans are better for skidding in. most riders that seem to be able to skid in that really cool way are wearing skinny jeans and make it look so easy. the type of trainer might help also but i dont know much about trainers so it might just be coincidence.
the jeans thing might have something to do with hairodynamics. this has nothing to do with hairstyles although the name suggests different (it caught me out too the first time somebody told me) its to do with the way the hair flows around you as you skid apparently, making it easier. not sure why there is a h though guess its just one of the quirks of the english languages.
just get out there put some skinny jeans on and try it out on grass as there should be less traction and when you mess up the damage to yourself and bike will be reduced. make sure that the grass is not higher than the bottom of your brackets.

    Fixed.

  • It took me ages to learn how to skid - what helped me was starting the skid as the just pedals approached horizontal - in this way I could use my body weight to initiate the skid without having to learn to far forward - I tend to do little sideways flicks though with either leg - rather than elongated slides

    brilliant

  • brilliant

    +1

probably why it took me so long to learn

The key thing is to kick it on its edge.

I believe a good understand of hairodynamics is essential before learning to skid.

I think maybe arsenal could do with some similar advice ;)

  • Htfu!!

  • not sure if the thread is serious, but... put your weight on your arms, and of course, if you are riding a bike with 90 gear inches is going to be tough. skidding isn't really necessary. get a brake for when you are first learning to ride, otherwise you're going to slam into something at a convincing clip. TO make it worse, before impact you'll have a few seconds to think, "i can't stop because i'm riding this dumb fucking bike"

  • i got a front brake.
but im using my foot to slow the back one so im shredding up my shoes.
    it's 48/15.
whats best to get it changed to?
and do you change the chainring or the bottom bracket?
