Hi.
To cut a rather long story short, In Africa for VSO, car crash, girlfriend still in hostpital and will be for a couple of months based near central London. As a result I need to get a job of any kind, though my background is IT (jack of all trades really). Im personable so working in a shop/bar is no problem (have done both) but quite frankly will do anything. But cycling related would be nice.
If anyone needs anything doing please let me know. CV and references no prob.
Ta much.
Ben

My flatmate (Out of work architect) has just got a job as a barman at a newly rennovated and reopened gastro pub (Hate that term) in north london.
It is opening soon and is affiliated with some other good pubs and restaurants.
They are looking for more experienced bar staff in what seems like it will be a nice, friendly place to work.
PM me and I will put you in contact.

Hi, post from Gumtree, thought i'd see if anyone interested for a 20 minute a weekday job, very easy money, N7
My regular dog walker is going back to America for two months and I am looking for someone who can spare 20 minutes between 12 and about 2 Mon to Fri for an immediate start.
I have to small dogs that need to be let out and taken to the park for a quick break around lunchtime. I am under 5 minutes from Highbury & Islington tube and about 30 seconds from the park.
The rate isabout £10 hour and due to the short walk works out at £35 week. There are other people requiring their dog walking as well so for someone reliable we could put you in touch.
This job would suit a student or similar based around Highbury/Islington or Holloway. Very low stress with two very lovely dogs.
PM if interested -

No, I'm pretty much the lowest quality of candidate that would get through.

Not specifically a vacancy, but I'm applying for a job at the moment and I've been asked to state on the covering letter what my salary expectation is.
What the fuck?
I've worked in the public sector my whole life so far, and so the advert always clearly states how much you're going to get paid. I haven't a clue what I'm supposed to say here! I'm willing to take a bit of a pay cut, because it's in an area I haven't worked before, but then again, because it's a consultancy role, does that mean I should aim higher?
I'm thinking of saying something along the lines of "due to the success I have achieved in my current role, I would be looking for a similar remuneration package, however I am willing to negotiate should this not match [the company's] expectations."
I'm totally confused - can anyone in the private sector help?!
-
• #191
Do I need to say it
If so...... ONE MILLION DOLLARS
-
• #192
Add another 10-20% onto your salary. Logic goes, if you're willing to work for less than you're currently making then you don't have confidence in your own abilities. Going in with a reasonable raise shows that you value yourself. If they can't afford you, then let them negotiate.
Also, the benefits may be a smaller part of the package in the private sector, so take that into account too.
-
• #193
Ask high but not unrealistically so. They'll pay you what they think you're worth and you don't want to go in low as you'll never make it back up.
A former boss of mine once told me it was my own fault my pay was lower than a colleague with less experience because "I'd not negotiated hard enough when I joined". To which I responded, "so that flannel you gave about the company being a meritocracy was just flannel then?".
-
• #194
no need to say you're willing to negotiate. I think thats a given.

Advice gratefully received. I have asked for 'one meeeeeeelion dollars' and an interest free arrospok loan.
It would have been nice to have at least some idea of what they were looking for. I mean, they didn't say anything about possible salary - how am I supposed to know if they're looking to offer £10k or £100k? I don't want to waste my time by applying for a job that pays a pittance, but I dont want to waste their time if they're actually looking for someone infinitely more qualified, experienced and able to command a higher salary.
Fucking private sector...

So you landed a new job? Interesting.
You should know how much pay to get to get if you know anything about the job.

Not yet - this is just the application. I suppose because it's a fixed term consultancy thing, it's more akin to bidding for a contract. If you're offering £40k for a high quality service, it'll be better than £20k for a worse one, even though you end up spending more.
Will just have to wait and see I suppose.

"Bidding for a contract" is really only applicable if terms can be compared like for like. In recruitment who is to say, given each and every application is completely unique.
On the other hand I get what you are trying to say. Perhaps you want to factor such know-how regarding pay into your application.

The private sector is of course problematic in some ways, but here they're simply relying on your own initiative (which in the public sector can feel as if it's taken away from you all the time--which is why those people who like working at their own initiative tend to hate working in the public sector). Also, other people applying for the job will have more experience of what they can realistically expect and feel quite comfortable setting a figure. The bottom line is that you need to have confidence as to what you're worth, and if they can't/don't want to pay that, then it's no deal. You shouldn't attempt to take a job that doesn't meet your pay expectations unless you are really stuck.

Just had an email from a recruitment agency I've dealt with in the past. They're looking for a web metrics analyst to work on a pretty major website. Salary around £40k. Hollah at me if you're interested - they're looking to fill it quickly.
Hey all,
I've seen a few people on here looking for work, so thought perhaps if there are any designers out there that are looking for a source of income, the t-shirt design business I work for are looking for designers. We have an ad on gumtree, but thought I'd post it here as well (below).
Hope this is useful for someone on here looking for work, or for someone that you might know. And by the way, we'll take on international designers a well.
Cheers.
www.WeAdmire.net is a t shirt publisher based in Shoreditch, London EC2. We started designing in September last year and we were indexed by google in November. A central feature of our shirts is that they celebrate and admire some aspect of human endeavour or nature at large, human or otherwise. We work with Adobe Creative Suite. Having paid some fees of experience since November last we are about to make radical changes to our website that are timetabled to take effect in early May.
Limits on t shirt design and content - if limits exist at all - are defined by designers' interests and motivation. The best designs tend to be founded in genuine interest, knowledge and appreciation of what is being admired. Designs so inspired will resonate with a wide audience and deliver self expression to wearers irrespective of how apparently obscure and esoteric the subject of the design might be. Ray Charles is on record as saying there are two types of music – good music and bad music. Something similar applies to t shirt design. The way to consistently produce the good stuff is by engaging with the topic. We do not want the primary design concern to be an attempted judgement of what might sell.
We print on demand. Shirts designed and published on WeAdmire.net can be kept permanently available in all colours and all sizes: they will not go out of print. There are presently more than 450 designs available on our website. It is possible if not likely this makes our selection of properly available original designs the largest of any such site on the internet. If this is not the case now, it will be soon. The designs presently on the site largely reflect the legacies and interests of a group of designers living and working in London. However we want to represent a broader range of legacies, interests and cultural backgrounds - whatever they are and from wherever they spring - in the designs we publish and make available via the internet. In time we intend to establish a network of local websites that will be better at representing cultures other than our own and these will likely be in the language of the country in which they are based but for the time being if you design and write in a language other than English you must be able to provide us with an English translation of your work.
We print our shirts one at a time. They are printed digitally using gas dispersion inks. Colour, complexity, resolution and size variations - the enemies of the standard screen printing process - are our friends. We prefer the designs we publish to tend toward the colourful, the detailed and the complex, with the size of the design proportional to the shirt it will be printed on.
We pay permanent designers a basic salary and a royalty for each shirt they design as it is sold for the time they work for us. For freelance designers we pay royalties and an advance on those royalties when we accept a design for publication to our website. Because the designs do not go out of print, we expect successful freelance designers to establish a long term cumulative stream of income.
If you are interested in becoming a designer for www.WeAdmire.net, please call Theo Stegers or Lawrence Keogh on 020 7377 1801 or email theo.stegers@weadmire.net. Please do not send a CV or portfolio of your work. In deciding to hire/offer a freelance agreement we are interested in understanding how you express yourself about that which engenders genuine enthusiasm in you. Please look at the website www.WeAdmire.net and consider the shirts you might design. Then make contact. We will decide to make you an offer on the basis of the conversations we have and the work we will ask you to do as part of the application process. This will typically be to design some shirts on a couple of topics of your choosing and one of ours or vice versa.
