• I take issue a bit with "you have to legislate for the least capable" BTW. "Least capable" is in this instance a near-synonym for "most utterly fuckwitted" and I'd submit that a lot of society's problems are explained precisely by legislating for that group to everyone else's detriment. But then I'm an old-fashioned Liberal - the last one in captivity, I sometimes fear :-(

I wholeheartedly agree with you on this issue. However, in today's age of litigation, if legislation exists to control the "most utterly fuckwitted" anywhere else, then you have to continue that in everything, especially when it comes to situations in which they could kill themselves. In effect, we don't legislate to protect them, but in order to protect ourselves from being sued because of their own stupidity.

• And on that subject, looks like Boris agrees with you. http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23675641-details/Cyclists+should+be+allowed+to+run+red+lights%2C+says+Boris/article.do

Surely this will make even more cyclists undertake lorries in order to go through the red!
What happens if the light changes half way through them getting to the front of the traffic?

• Just had a leaflet through the door from the local plod.
They are going to be having a blitz on pavement cycling in the Cambridge Heath Rd & Bethnal Green Rd areas in the next few months. No doubt there are targets to meets, so expect a few fixed penalty notices and an unusual amount of jobsworthyness.

Good.

• They tried but the amount of alcoholic fuel required for "The Bendix" to hit 88mph is substantial, very few pubs can sustain refuelling "The Bendix" for long.

*
word on the streets is "The Bendix" downs pints of Absynth* and green chartreuse with an Ether chaser before setting herself alight and attacking the streets of London.

Sadly the no smoking ban has left her with even fewer refuelling stops. but she is hard enough!

I see what you're getting at. Problem is that that way of looking at things rules out any improvement in the situation, ever, since whenever any protection is introduced in any arena everything else has to leap up to the same standard.

I for one would like to continue using a chef's knife in the kitchen without a health and safety assessment :-(

• I regularly see the local plod cycling on pavements around my way (Bexleyheath / Welling). Should I stop turning a blind eye in the future?

And the winner is - first pic posted of police riding on the pavement

• cycling on the pavement is stupid, and i don't do it. but when you can't cycle from the rack to the road, about 5 feet, that is rediculous. waking with your bike to the road, and having to mount it from the pavement in the gutter is just embarrassing.

• "Easy"
Surely that pic don't count as it's in the States - they can cycle on the pavement with their hipster guns and make the peds look guilty for getting in the way.

• How the police will fight you with their bike.

• Interesting, but still not proper police - PCSOs are the plastic ones.

Do any proper plods still ride bikes at all in Great Britain?

• Yep, saw some in Angel today.

• What the fuck are you doing riding on the footpath anyway? I'd fine ya and maybe give you a couple of cracks with a nightstick for a laugh. Happy Days :)

+1

• i ride on watever is quickest, whether its pavement, road, one way roads(the wrong way) im not really fussed aslong as im getting where im going quickly and safely, so i obviously wont ride in the middle of a one way road and i wont ride on a pavement where alot of pedestrians are about.

• Interesting, but still not proper police - PCSOs are the plastic ones.

Yep - saw one in Heathrow yesterday. Riding in an airport - does that count for a ticket?

• I am completely against cycling on the pavement, I don’t enjoy doing it at all, I feel guilty, I ride slowly because I know I shouldn’t be there. However, I cycle on the pavement twice a day. Why?

Because I work in Angel near the junction with Pentonville Road/Islington High St/City Road and I come down York Way, along Copenhagen Street, Barnsbury Road, Penton Street then I should go onto Pentonville Road and down it until the junction. But I’m scared of cycling on Pentonville Road because it’s a scary scary road with lots of lorries on it, so I go down White Lion St, then go the wrong way down Baron Street then cycle along the pavement of the last bit.

And when I come out of work there is no way I am doing a right turn out onto Pentonville Road, so I go towards Kings Cross down the pavement then become legal at the turn onto Baron Street.

So in short, a combination of a thoughtless one way system and a big scary road is what pushes me onto the pavement. I would like to think if caught doing this the cop would show some judgement as all the rest of my way to work I stick to the road, although there’s no way I can prove this of course...

• "Footpath"

Its the fucking "footpath"!

"Pavement" bollocks.

• I think it may be a footway.

• a Footment

• Sidewalk?

ducks

• I think it may be a footway.

voms

I believe it is, officially. The sort of unnecessary and hideous coinage that makes me want to stab the originator in their stupid eyes.

• Huh? Theres an "official" name???

scurries away

Every CM some of them turn out to wobble slowly round town after work doling out RLJ tickets to anyone who looks like they might attend, as I know to my fixed-penalty cost. The irony is that I wasn't going to go, but they were such pious, smug cunts about it that I did for the first time in about five years.

• @Fox - you have a valid point. in general you should stay off the pavement. but if it is the better option and it's safe then do it.
laws are the line of best fit in the world of rules so there will always be points under and below the line. Drivers always drive in bus lanes and park in cycle boxes, abuse box junctions and park ilegally. not always dangerous but has to be done to get by.
If a copper does pull you you got two options. Drop them or explain it to them.
