I'm looking to cycle around Ireland next year on fixed with just a messenger bag, perhaps a nice big chrome one(gives me an excuse to buy one.
I was thinking of going to a B and B where possible but it would be far to expensive, although it's a bit dodgy camping in random fields, what do you do with the bikes when camping?

would be wary of full touring (ie with tent) without racks...your back will not thank you for it if you do
-

Well I'd be hoping to be travelling quite light
clothes I have on plus
t shirt x2
light combats
cycling jersey
socks x2
boxers x2
Light tent
Light sleeping bag
Basic toolsAnd instead of a sleeping mat bubble wrap is meant to be the way to go

I'd strap sleeping bag to handlebars, tent poles to top tube then tent and stove and tools under saddle keeps most of the weight off your back and you'd be sorted.

I plan to sleep at b&b's and just take a mid to large size saddlebags from carradice.
I have a chrome bag, but I don't want to carry the load for 6 hours a day. -

If you're going in Summer then why not just take a bivvy bag?

Hey Disaster IRL, whereabouts in Ireland are you based, Im in Dublin?
I was hoping to do something similar over the summer. I was hoping t head abroad but I think I'll be super broke and hopping around Ireland instead. Maybe start off with a shorter trip if your keen?

Yeah, I'd avoid touring with just a messenger bag. I use a reload bag, which is of comparable quality to a Chrome. The thing is, once I get off the bike, if there's any more than just a kilo in it it starts to aggravate my shoulder. On the bike, I can bike for a few hours, but it still doesn't have the support of a backpack. Maybe look into chromes (and other companies) messenger backpacks. They've gotten good reviews.

Ha! Russell the weekend adventurer is a goof. Just go home, Russell.
I watched all 9 minutes of that.

I can't say I'd recommend a chrome bag. When I have 2 school books and a laptop in there I struggle with it around town. You are really going to feel the weight on your one shoulder and the heat generated on your back is pretty extreme.

Also, if you use twitter PM me your name. I'd love to follow the progress.

I also watched him make a camp stove out of a budwieser can, and some insulating foam for his water bottles so they dont freeze.
He's oddly compelling.

Ha. I did the same. I think he if compelling in that strange way Saturday morning TV is. You want to stop but just can't be bothered. I watched him go a bike ride too.
I am very sad.

I'm also Dublin based pothole surfer
I'm looking at just cycling to Cork or somewhere similar this summer and getting the train back, perhaps do a few similar trips.
Also does anyone know any small and easy to set up tents, cheap if possible :D
