Peugeots sometimes have odd sized tubes - seat posts are a nightmare to find for them, and the threads are french-threaded.
Raleighs might be Raleigh-threaded. (when they were the largest factory in the world they didn't need to bother with standards.)Both of these are a pain in the arse to get bits for. British or Italian thread is much easier.
There is a thread which is a list of tyres. There are similar lists of other components.
To be honest you can build a very nice bike for £500.

Hi Guys,
I was thinking of building up a frame (im probably looking for some old raleigh or peugeot frame, so until i've got that i cant start, obviously!) i have about £500 budget and was not sure where to put the money, i was looking at hubjub and, god, those nitto bars, got to have one of them, probably one of the drops so thats about £45 gone, then a seguino crank (the cheapest) £65 and then im am lost on which wheels to buy, im going to try and use the headset on the frame, and il probably buy a stronglight stainles steel ring and a dura ace cog for the wheel, a KMX chain (whatever i need 1/4 / 3/38" etc) a shimano BB oh an a nitto stem (possibly) if anyone has any parts going spare i might take snap them up :) oh and tyres, how much should i spend and which should i get i heard those soma everwears are good but at £40 a tyre, thats ridiculous (in my opinion) hehe.Anyway, thanks (oh and any links to older threads would be very helpful as well, and i have searched around a fair bit)

With the tyres, I personally recommend Armadillos are ridiculously hardwearing (they last years) and only got them £20 a piece.
Though look here http://www.londonfgss.com/thread11148.html ... very useful list.

Use the search for "list of lists". Comprehensive database of bits.
-
• #21
I have already looked at that but im looking for something cheap an old frame preferably
thanks -
• #22
I thought we were talking components?

I'd put money into a decent frame and wheels with whatever componentry fitted the budget.
I don't see an old Carbolite gate with Nittos as a winner.
Not that there's anything specifically wrong with that, if it makes you happy!
Perhaps consider a moderately priced OTP (secondhand?) and then a rolling upgrade program as you establish exactly what you require from each component.
Then when you've upgraded everything, rebuild the OTP and sell it!

Is this a good frame then, i was thinking a front arrospok (or Deep V) and a rear deep V with a polished formula hub :) then a shimano 105 front brake then i have no idea for a headset (do a need anything special for a quill stem?) preferably something classic like a campag record but i doubt my budget could afford that (£800 probably more) nitto quill and drops or risers, open to ideas for a saddle and a classic looking seatpost (second hand nitto?) any brushed metal! suigino RD cranks with a surly stainless steel ring and dura ace for the rear cog and KMC chain probably, any advice would be much appreciated!
