• ^^That just made my day.

Tim, you're pointing at your own post with two ^s! ;)

I love the song, too. Great lyric. Should be the ride theme tune. Can you have a finite simple group of order (number of riders on the ride)? I'm afraid I haven't the foggiest what a group is in maths. I think we were just about to tackle that at school when we ran out of time ... oh, and even if we had there's no way I'd remember it ...

  • Is it ok if I just turn up, ride my bike hard for 120miles and dont do any maths?

  • Is it ok if I just turn up, ride my bike hard for 120miles and dont do any maths?

    No.

You could have worked that out for yourself if you'd done the maths. FFS. ;)

  • Come to Easts tonight Oliver and I'll tell you about groups rings and fields. I have a few books I could lend you as well.

Cheers, looking forward to the explanation although owing to acute lack of time and of course no lack of further thoroughgoing interest I'll have to pass on the books! It'll have to be later, unfortunately--I'm away at the moment and the first Easts I'll be able to make will be April the 8th. See you then, hopefully!

The maths is there to slow anyone too fast down.

I'm learning my times tables now to set me up for a possible laterne rouge.

  • Will we ride as a group, field or.... ring?

Best post ever. Nice one Tim.

    I'm not sure that counts, it's a bit self-referential!

Coincidentally, I have just started re-reading [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Godel-Escher-Bach-Eternal-anniversary/dp/0140289208/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1238064921&sr=8-1"]Douglas Hoffstadter's GEB: Godell, Escher Bach - An Eternal Golden Braid.[/ame]

If you are on this thread then I hugely recommend reading this book. By far the most impressive treatise I have ever encountered; synthesising mathematics, art, computation, consciousness and a whole lot more.

It's so nice to find something that can make your brain spin a good, "flying down hill on a fixed wheel but in control" kind of way.

  • Oooo, automatic amazon embedding. Cool.

  • GEB is always in my "to read" pile and I'm slowly chugging through it.

    I have:

[ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Course-Number-Cryptography-Graduate-Mathematics/dp/0387942939/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1238070009&sr=8-1"]A Course in Number Theory and Cryptography…Amazon.co.uk: Neal Koblitz: Books[/ame]

to get through first though, current course and what not.

  • I tried half the route last weekend, it's awesome.

I'll be doing the whole thing (fixed) this Sunday PM me if anyone wants to join.

  • Nice work, I'm actually not due to do the dry run for another two weeks. PM me if you have any idea for route changes once you've done it.

  • Would like to come down for this ride, if I can get to KX for 8am can I meet somewhere? don't know North London that well though? How are you getting back to London? and what time do you expect to be back? I can get a train home from KX at 6.40pm should be ok?

We're leaving east London at 8 sharp. Porbably the easiest place to meet would be the top of highgate (I can draw you a map) but if there are any delays you'll miss the ride.

You can have crash space if you'd rather come down the night before?

Also 6.40 home would be easily do-able, we'll be in in Bletchley at for 12 or earlier and the trains from MK to London are frequent on a Saturday.

I would suggest you wait outside Archway Station for the group to pass. Pretty straight forward getting there from Kings X. Straight up York Way. Follow the one-way System onto Breknock Road, then at the end of that, bare right onto Junction Road. This will take you straight to Archway Underground where they should be cycling past at about 8.20ish.

You will need to hurry though if the train gets in at 8. But this way, there are no hills to get up before you meet everyone

How was your day, ste5? You had nice weather for it.

  • Train actually arrives KX at 08:04 and that's if it's on time, probably best to come down Fri night if that's ok? Can be at KX 6.30pm, 8pm or 10pm. whatever suits?

  • Come stay at Growbag towers Mike e. You know you want to.

The earlier you arrive the more hungover we'll be for the ride. Anytime is good with us though.

Jim, he is stopping at Grobag towers you cretin.

Best ride of the year so far, there are some fun little roads, good english countryside and traffic was mostly quiet. Didn't ride back though, I'd imagine you'd need to change one or two bits of the route for the reverse direction.

My parents live near Bletchley so this is a convenient training ride for me.Probably doing the route again on this saturday, so I'll pass on any advice on the route after that.

Would love to join the ride but I'm in Belgium on the 20th of June.
