From my perspective, there's a difference between feeling bad for the girl and her family, and actually feeling a personal connection to her.

I think that's what I was trying to say (badly) - the personal connection isn't a prerequisite for feeling bad/empathy/sympathy etc.....unless you're jimjams ;)
