The way I see it (and what I meant above) is that her apparent lack of self-esteem made her value being in the press as being popular / famous / a celebrity - an end in itself if you like, rather than a means to provide for her children.

You are absolutely right - this is obvious as her children were born after she began her quest for fame. I also think things change over time, for instance - what was once a hobby might later be realised as a way to provide for your family.
