Greg, Matt and I rode to Bishops Stortford a few weeks ago and that took a hell of a lot longer than last night but was only 6 miles more.
It's interesting not having much of a grasp of the area because for the majority of the ride last night I had no idea where we were or how far around we were.
I'm all up for long distance riding, I tend to ride a little slower when I'm on my own but it's good for me going out with others because you can use them as 'pacers'
night time cooler air, less traffic, more folk, more potential for drafting, better time of day to exercise, lots of factors make evening social rides far better distance coverers than day rides with fewer people. me and eddie took 6 hours to cycle great shelford - ugley - great shelford, including lunch stop, pit stops, energy stops, and photo ops. i reckon the same ride in the evening would take 3 hours.
