Surely this area, if it is so bad, can be avoided?
It could be, but the better answer would be to design the area to be safe for all road users.
As a cyclist I am tired of so called "cycling routes" diverting me long distances away from the quickest route to where I want to go. I realise that all time spent cycling is good time and so on, but when I'm a commuter, I want the same comforts that planners desperately pursue for motorised commuters, namely a quick, effective, efficient and safe route to work. I do not want to have to trundle off of some milk route like I'm a second class citizen.
