  • you would only get random lumps from the tube being caught under the bead of the tyre.

a 28 tube will fit fine in a 28 tyre. hence the corresponding sizes.

the inside of a rando 28 isnt 'like 25' its 'like' 28.

  • Naturally I'd think so had it not been for Sheldon Brown (and some help from other people on the forum);

Competitive pressures have often led to inaccuracy in width measurement. Here's how it works: Suppose you are in the market for a high performance 700 x 25 tyre; you might reasonably investigate catalogues and advertisements to try to find the lightest 700-25 available. If the Pepsi Tyre Company and the Coke Tyre Company had tyres of equal quality and technology, but the Pepsi 700-25 was actually a 700-24 marked as a 25, the Pepsi tyre would be lighter than the accurately-marked Coke 700-25. This would put them at a competitive advantage. In self defense, Coke would retaliate by marketing an even lighter 700-23 labeled as a 700-25.

  • This thread made me CREASE. Ed, you're a legend.

Just did my first tyre change on the current wheelset - didn't have quite as bad a time as Ed did, but it wasn't exactly a walk in the park. I get to do it all over again when my Rubino Pros arrive too...

Randos are made by Vittoria, not the Pepsi or Coke Tyre Companies.

  • never question sheldon

  • x 1,000,000

  • 28c Rando casing is 25.5mm wide according to my verniers. Sheldon speaketh the troof.

    how high/tall?

  • as tall as a 28c.

    ...see what they did there?

  • :-)

  • haha! poor ed! so what was the final cost ?

3 inner tubes + one track pump + 9-ish hours?

  • You obviously haven't had the pleasure of putting one on. Makes me angry just thinking about that yellow bastard!

Who Ray? Yeah know what you mean

That's nothing compared to the shit he now has to wade through from us :)

  • I'm down to the 'red' already...

  • when did you get the tyre Josh?

  • Just put some 35c Randonneurs on my cross bike (good compromise of weight and puncture proofness I hope, don't particularly need that much grip as don't actually race)

There are not many tyres that have been easier to put on, just pushed straight onto the rim.
This was the folding version onto an Open Pro.

And not mocking you Ed, honestly :-)

  • the bigger ones are easier to put on. 28's are tight, but still go on.

  • Folding versions should be a breeze to put on anyhow.

    Wire beads can be trickier.

Really? I always find wire bead easier to fit than a folding tyre.

  • Depends on rim etc, but thats my experience.

This chat is really boring.. i don't even know why I posted that up...sorry

  • Heh, I responded didn't I? Not sure who that makes look worse. Probably me :)

  • Don't come folded do they?

  • The Randonneur Pro does, little bit more expensive than the regular Randonneur.

  • Ouch - £24

  • Folding tyres can definitely be painful on some rims. Try Vittoria Rubino Pro Tech on Campag Proton rims, for example - my hands actually blistered after the first time I had to do that. And then the tyre split nastily on the Dunwich Dynamo - about half an inch long right in the middle of the tread so I had to improvise a boot. Hence my remaining Rubinos residing in the last-ditch-spares bin.
