is it a strictly fixed affair, or could one (if one wished) to plump for a freewheelin' SS steed, or even one of those bikes with different sized cogs at the back, without facing too much ridicule?

answer to the first bit is yes - probably next weekend if the weather is looking fine.

strictly fixed - no. though some ridicule may need to be tolerated but you can always ridicule me back about my plastic wheel. the ride is pretty good on fixed - not too many sharp hills but just enough to keep you enterained.
