Lycra or padded undershorts under jeans if you need to. Or Rapha fixed shorts. Or Swrve shorts, Endura Humvees, lots of MTB shorts around etc etc.

It's more the weight of denim. When it gets a little 'moist' it starts becoming really restrictive. Yuck.

Like the look of the Swrve shorts http://www.swrve.co.uk/mens%20shorts.html# - any cheaper similar alternatives out there?

Lycra ftw. If you're shy then shy shorts, ie. mtb shorts with inners/chamois/whatever. Oh and HTFU.

a bit off topic but are the swrve caps any good? The wool cycling caps look fab.

I wear lycra under my jeans but the jeans will soon be swapped out for shorts if the weather stays as is

Am loving my new Endura Humvees, been using ordinary cheap shorts up till now. Bit the bullet and spent 39 notes on the Bay and am well impressed with them. Only thing that's a bit cack is the supplied belt, its so thin it might as well be a piece of string.

i've got a pair of Swrve 3/4 shorts and they're fantastic.
-

Rapha fixed shorts ftw (if you have the cash and inclination!)
Normally I wouldn't touch Altura stuff with a barge pole, but the Mayhem 3/4s are really nice and fairly cheap, as are the new Summit 3/4s but not due out until mid-spring

All the mountain bike shorts seem a bit too 'badass' for me. They're named after military vehicles etc and are really baggy for a skinny lad like myself. I can't afford Rapha, so it's those padded undershorts under Cheap Mondays or Uniqulo jeans (they're both light) for the mo'
Mountain biking accessory marketing makes me laugh. All the graphics seems to be based on flame tattoos at the moment. Tragic.

I wear black Endura mtb shorts for commuting. Cheap, durable, quick drying. They have a load of pockets that I never use but it's not much of an issue. Better than the Rapha Fixed shorts that are 2x or 3x the price.
You can wear lycra underneath other shorts/trousers?
