i feared as much...
I'm also looking to get a geared road bike. i don't want to spend more than £1200 and i'm 6'6" so i think my options are limited (evans on the cut had one specialized that fitted me...)
any ideas which other forum would be a good place to ask about this? i could launch into it now, but this isn't really the appropriate place i think.........!

Velorution has developed Velocommute, an Open Source Implementation Pack, that any employer can use, without limiting the choice of bikes for the employees.
Even if your employer has signed up with Evans, they can still implement the scheme internally and allow you to buy a bike anywhere. It is generally much simpler for them, rather than using the voucher schemes
If your employer has any questions, I will be happy to help. We have been very successful in convincing many local employers in dealing directly with us, even if they already had a link with cyclescheme, evans, etc...

afraid only Evans will accept vouchers as ride2work is an independant scheme run by Evans. However the good thing is you can 'top up' your voucher and add money to it. I just bought a £1700 geared bike with my voucher and paid the surplus on debit card. Most other places on 'cyclescheme' are very reluctant to do this.
Where I work, You can buy anybike you like on "cyclescheme," The limit is a £1000 and anything over that you can pay the rest yourself, making any bike possible. If your company has a credit license (ei, if you work for a mobile phone shop or a car dealer..) then your cyclescheme allowance is over £1000

very nice - sadly bianchis don't really come up big enough...
i test rode an allez, but it felt like a hybrid (it was so upright). I was reluctant to spend the non-refundable £50 to order something else to test (£50?! to try a bike!) without first checking whether i could possibly go elsewhere. since i can't, i'll order a couple (cannondale and trek - only americans make bikes for giants apparently) and see...
i hope it rides well

if evans have the bike in the warehouse or at another store, then the £50 is refundable.

Does anybody with experience of the ride2work scheme know if Evans are particular about what you spend your voucher on? as my girlfriends looking to buy a bike through the scheme and I'd like to get a part for my BMX also but don't know if Evans will have a problem with that.

You can buy anything that in theory you could ride to work on. This would include any complete bike, even DH/BMX etc, and any accessories that could be used i.e. helmets, pump, lights, clothing etc.
You cannot buy custom upgrade components, so BMX parts are out, and stuff like turbo trainers, car racks, energy products are also not allowed.
