I've always thought of the unique relationship between the feminist movement and bikes - when the old penny farthing style bikes became obsolete and replaced with a bike that they could actually ride (in a skirt), late C19th women had the opportunity for mobility, freedom and independence in a way that had not happened before. I always wondered whether this was influential to the suffragette movement...
