  • I've been lurking a while, but reading the Rider Down thread and the memorial ride thread really stuck it to me -- this is a real community of cyclists, and I want in. It was a bit premature to join I spose, given that I have gears, but oh well. Looking for a giant frame to accommodate my legs, and hoping I won't have to buy a new one...

I cycle everywhere, but mostly commuting a paltry 7 miles each way. SS / fixie would be perfect, and I'll be able to stop worrying about my bike being stripped when I lock it up.

  • Hi all newbie here from West London getting back into SS after a 30 year absence but for the sake of my knees I wil be riding a freewheel Cannondale Bad Boy for the time being (ducks and waits to get flamed)

  • Hello. Don't be scared - West london doesn't hate.
    We are lovers.

  • make love to her, like a tiger

  • Oh FE(*E)&AOUIJFCNAASKK you man!!
I'm not growing my hair again.
    (like a tiger)

  • you just called me a sausage lover!

  • I've been skimming these forums for a while so I figured I would finally jump in and get involved.

Been riding a single speed for the last couple of months. Glad to not be dealing with gears anymore as they were just a point of failure on my last bike. Though after years of riding with gears I do find myself reaching for them as a reflex action only to find they aren't there.

  • hey all. im stevie. i live in dublin. i recently built a fixie. thought i might as well join a forum of like minded people

Only on Thursdays and Sundays. The rest of the time is all about hatin'.
I can only speak for West London's midgets though.

  • Alright guys

Been looking at the site for a while now, thought it was about time to join in the fun.

Been on a fixie for a couple of years now as a courier for EcoLocal down in south london enjoying the hills. We're a very small zero emission courier business/charity, renovating old and unwanted bikes, mobile cycle mechanic and run cycling for all sessions called Gear up. Also looking to get out there as an instructor to try and get more people on their bikes at some point.

Hoping to do a charity ride to paris and back in the summer for gear up for anyone who's interested, will put up a new post when i'm out of the nursery.

  • Welcome, EcoLoco. What you're doing sounds great!

  • yup, sounds good to me too. hi

  • hello people

what do they say about doing something that scares you everyday? it's time for that daunting first post ;-)...

i've had a SS for about 2 months now and am loving the murderous money pit that it is..

i finally joined the forum the day after Eilidh's memorial ride when no-one pointed, laughed or poked me with sticks. the friends i have who are already here were right all along, and the new faces i met on saturday were proof that this is a unique and colourful group of strange and wonderful people. and who would want it any other way.

right, enough for the debut. wests for drinks one of these nights!

  • a fellow FITZ welcome

  • So I guess I should introduce myself, already been posting and that but hey.

Last bike was a heavily modded carbolite pug, unfortunately I rode that into the ground. The rear hub literally disintegrated. Due to lack of cash since then I have been riding my housemate's horrible mountain bike with dual suspension, heavier than a black hole. No more!

I now have an awesome 531 custom racer, which as soon as money allows will become fixed. Yes I have gears now (sacriledge) but I'm poor :( Plan to salvage the campy brakes from the pug as well as the rims, lace up a nice crows foot rear and might even run radial on the front if I can afford a nice forged hub. Campy headset and Cinelli 66 drops, Cinelli 1A stem. BB shell is stamped Cinelli too, dunno what the actual BB is but it's smooth. Shimano chainring, MKS Sylvan pedals. It rides really nice already and is super light, can't wait to see how it is fixed!

I love bikes, love riding and love the mechanical stuff too. I studied Engineering for four years before I realised it's a bit dull. For the last three years I've been a graphic designer, but still enjoy tinkering with things - mainly bikes! I also LOVE building wheels, it's kind of art meets science which is cool (to me at least).

So yeah, hello and all that!

  • Hi im saul, ive been looking at the forum for a couple of days, mainly at the classifieds, because i want to build a bike for the summer. Ive built BMXs and other bikes in the past, but not for a while and i was just looking for a little bit of a help really, mainly on deciding what size frame to get. If any one could give me a hand please drop me a pm if you have the time, if not could any one direct me to a thread where these sort of problems are dealt with :D

Ha! It finally comes true! I was the Grant Officer who assessed your lottery grant that funded this project many moons ago at the CEI offices.

Glad to see the courier programme is set up. How's the rest of the project going? I don't work for BIG Lottery anymore you see, but have quoted the project as a good case study (in theory as I only saw the first six months of it).

Best of luck with it all!

  • hey mr fitz - a recent joiner also? nice to make your acquaintence...

@greasy slaaag & CB.. nothing wrong with these legs that a bit more riding won't cure... checking the diary for the 30th. if i start out now, i might just make it for last orders :o)

  • Hello all
Just thought I would dip my toe in the water and say hi – have been reading up on a few things on the forum – very useful stuff, but I fear that I am just the sort of person that is going to get loads of abuse, because I am not hardcore enough. I bought a new bike (charge plug) to try and do some exercise during the week at work, and just to get around town on, embarrassingly, I do not commute on it because I just cant bring myself to deal with rush hour traffic in London – too dangerous for me – but I try and get out for an hour or so most days at lunch time to cover some miles.

I am still using it singlespeed, but toying with the idea of trying out fixed, also not sure what to do about pedals. At the moment still using the standard platforms, I have toe-clips on my mountain bike but hate them, don’t want to go the hole clipless route, so might try some powergrips.

Anyway if you see a newb riding a new plug that looks too shiny – don’t give me too much abuse!

i am getting them excited early big man, rumour is bright times could be a-foot???
