  • have fun on this ride. Shame I'm missing out, due to college work, but looking forward to seeing people on another one soon!

  • I'd be up for this but the missus is working so i'm looking after the kids, i'm trying to get her to swap this sunday for mothers day but she's so selfish.

    Have a great ride

  • Do I get a positive one for buying myself a proper light today for the Brighton run?

Out of my non-existant student money? =P

Oops, missed this one--yes, you would, if I could com you!

  • out, q tip calls.

    Huh!? where is QTip playing?

  • OK, who's coming, then? Current list:

    1. Oliver Schick
    2. mmccarthy
    3. GinaG
    4. 50/14

    Maybes:

    eyebrows?
    owenreed?

  • Another piece of info on the route: It's really quite beautiful, and with the exception of Reigate, Gatwick and the string of coastal conurbations, we'll be avoiding towns almost completely. This also means that several of the lanes are a bit rough. The road surface between Charlwood and Partridge Green is poor in places, so take sturdy tyres, and at least one spare inner tube.

    roundhouse, tomorrow night.

  • The way we found to minimise the train fare is to buy a group ticket (has to be a group of four). Last time it worked out at £6.70 each I think. The saving more than paid for brekkie in Brighton.

So now to recruit at least three more....

    1. Oliver Schick
    2. mmccarthy
    3. GinaG
    4. 50/14
    5. Dropout

    Bailing, too much work

  • Shame you won't be there Henry, who's gonna make a video of it? =P

See you on the next one i'm sure.

  • Sorry you can't make it, Henry--hope your work goes well!

  • Hi Oliver when you're down below Horsham try and avoid going near the South Lodge Hotel near Crabtree - some of the worlds leading arseholes are having a jolly there this weekend.

I imagine the country filth would relish greatly the chance to take potshots at cycle-based terrorists staging an attack at 2am.
I wish I could come along, but have waaay too much work on at the moment to consider it - next time though.

  • We could make sure that no one hears what they say, ever again =P

Clicked the link, seen G20, and was very disapointed, I was expecting this: http://www.pistonheads.com/doc.asp?c=112&i=4323

Haha that's what the world's leading arseholes will be driving around the country lanes ;-)

  • Well done, for alerting us to the G20 finance ministers' meet up, Richard. If I see a line-up of limos in some leafy lane, i'm heading the other way!

@ Henry: shame you can't do this, some travelator track-stand practice is on the cards.

@ Moth; good name- are you the sort who just comes out at night?

  • I might possibly be coming, will decided tomorrow..

If I do: fixed or geared? (bare in mind this will be the first proper ride I'll have done with downtube shifters :P)

  • I come out in the day too, but i do like riding at night, to the extent that i'm probably a night cyclist on average. Never done an all-nighter before though, and this will be a fairly long ride by my standards - i've only occasionally done more than 50 miles in one go. How much food and clothing do you carry?

Also, I have a spare cateye el510 i can lend to anyone who needs it.

Fairly hilly, doable on fixed on sensible gearing, but as ever I'll be doing it geared.

  • Downtube shifters ftw!

Gonna get myself a new road bike in the summer, looking at the old Peugeots, you shall never see me near a pair of STI shifters =P

The only STI for me is this: http://www.pistonheads.com/doc.asp?c=47&i=10486

Apologies for the third time this thread =P

Don't overdo the food, moth--we'll do a stop at Gatwick at roughly the halfway point, where you can re-provision yourself. The key is to eat and drink in small portions and sips as you ride along--ideally, you'll be able to eat and drink while riding. I only take a couple of vegetable samosas and a couple of energy bars.

As ever, don't worry too much about the distance--you'll be fine. The main consideration is logistics--i.e., don't wear things that chafe, make sure your bike is functioning well, that you have a spare inner tube with you, that your light is bright enough to light the way, etc.

  • And yes, we still need a volunteer for backstop. Please think about whether you'd like to do this. It'll be a smaller group than last time, but it's still possible that we might lose someone. The task is very easy--you're simply the last rider on the road and if someone has to stop, you phone the front of the ride to alert them in case they haven't noticed.

So, Crabtree. Where is this 'Crabtree' that you speak of? Ah, found it. Well, we won't be going through the place--we'll turn off the A281 in Monk's Gate to go to Nuthurst. I don't expect that we'll be credit crunched.

  • I'll be back on-line just before 5.

  • I'm afraid this now clashes with pigfarmer's birthday party, so 'cos I'm old and lazy i'm going to glad rag it instead. Will be up for the next one though.
