  • I think that it is possible for cyclists to really be a cut above the rest. Contador only started cycling aged 17/18, he's got a natural talent.

    Look at Jaques Anquetil. He was a huge doper, but at a time when everyone else doped as well. He was a BIG cut above the rest, winning the most prestidious TT when only 17 I think. Yes it does smack of foul play, the climber from nowhere who beats the best at what isn't suposed to be his game, but are we so cynical that we no longer believe that true talent and abilitity alone can create great performances? I suppose the bad guys have destroyed our reserves for benefit of the doubt and faith....

    The doping regime Anquetil followed was pretty basic consisting mainly of amphetamines. Whilst he may have taken a lot of them they actually gave very little advantage over his rivals.

    The alleged doping regime Contador is on, i.e. blood doping and growth hormones, requires supervision by a doctor and gives a 15-20% increase in power output. That is a phenomenal difference.

    That ride on Sunday was beyond belief.
