Riding in a bunch down into Brighton, two of us were spinning madly on 42x16 and, according to riders with computers we were nudging 35mph before the other fixed rider's chain came off. We slowed down at that point.
Ask Fixedwheelnut though - I think he's hit 40mph on fixed.
With a freewheel, as has been said, you're limited by the road and your nerves. I've never broken the 45mph barrier but hit 44.7 on Westerham Hill years ago.

It is the only time I have topped 200rpm and probably only a nano second as I maxed out at the lower end of the hill.
On the flat it was about 32 at 160rpm, pub sprint, "the real trackies can beat that easily.
In the days of gears 51mph early 90s on the Action 100 Bath to London ride, I even had my feet tucked in on the top of the chainrings and bricked it once I saw I was over 50.
