    Surely you would keep the tubs though Ed, what with those legendary tyre changing skills I have heard about :-)

  • in 8 months of riding in london i think i've had about 10 punctures on the back (have switched to gatorskins now..) and never had a single puncture on the front, despite still using the shitty kenda tyres.. so i reckon a gatorskin tub on the front would be a reasonably safe bet..

    What do you mean by that? I get what you mean with cyclocross. It's all about being able to run low pressures I've heard. If you're asking about daily riding with tubs, that's been covered many a time. Tubs just aren't as convenient as clinchers (although I've never had a single puncture on Rubino Pros or Gatorskins).

    I'm very tempted by a nice lightweight sprint wheelset for the geared bike but don't like the idea of being stranded 60 miles from home (and probably 30 miles from civilisation).

    Do you mean tubeless? That's available.

    I've just invested in another pair of clinchers for the road bike. My older wheels were dead after shredding the rims with gravel and grit during heavy rain and a ride along a canal tow path. What died were Fulcrum Racing Zeros, and I'm replacing them with Fulcrum Racing Lights.

    I was really taken by a £800 wheelset on eBay, they were tubs but I was too damned slow:

    Sodding gorgeous. Wish I'd had them.

    But then, the Fulcrums are 43% reduced over at Wiggle right now. It's a little beyond my budget but I think a few punctures on those Edge wheels would have added up quite quickly.

    Some wise words from the ever knowledgeable hillbilly means I won't shirk from tubs in future, but I'm still kicking myself about not getting that Edge wheelset, here's hoping a pair of Racing Lights make me feel better about it.

    £425 for the pair of hubs
    And then spokes (CX Lasers) and build.

    I've gone for last years model, the Fulcrum Racing Lights are pretty much identical to Campagnolo Hyperons. Wiggle are currently knocking 43% off the price tag.

    Bear in mind, this is for the Serotta. I don't buy wheels like this for the fixed bike, but I'm unlikely to put cheap wheels on such a lovely bike.

    Why would you be stranded? Carry a spare tub and a bottle of sealant, such as Vittoria Pit Stop, and you'll be able to repair or replace and ride home.

    I was being way too cheeky and made a £500 offer. In the meantime I was asking hillbilly about them, popped back 30 minutes later and they'd gone for £800.

    I would've probably have gone to a grand to get them but was hesitating initially over the fact that they were tubs.

    On the road, the pros simply outweight the cons. In the vast majority of situations, clinchers are a definite no-brainer.

  • Do tubs actually feel any different then? I just bought some wheels and am looking at vittoria rally tyres, £12 each at wiggle

  • The Vittoria rally tyres ride nicely. Obviously you get what you pay for and pricey tubs will grip more, roll quicker and perhaps have a puncture strip.

    I think they're good value, and that's important if your binning them after a flat!

  • what im getting out of this is that people who use tubs ride them on "special occasions" bikes, not as every-day on the road tyres. is there anyone who has tubs on their daily ride?
