Don't really know why or how I've gotten sucked into defending Goody, but I think it's a bit unfair to suggest that because Roy Castle used his battle with cancer selflessly, she has done something wrong. There's always going to be someone you can compare your actions too, and you're always going to be found wanting. Also, Roy was campaigning against a widespread social problem - passive smoking. Jade's cancer, AFAIK, was not brought on by anything as obvious as that. She was just unlucky.
The Guardian covered her wedding today and I was tempted to post the story up, as it's easy to sneer. But they also published an opinion piece by Michael White that makes the point that class and education are huge barriers to social mobility in Britain today. Don't agree with all of what he writes, but that point's a good one.
CHUG_IT, what do you think of Boris? The only differences between Boris and Jade are class (i.e. accent) and educational opportunities. In terms of intellectual vacuity and casual racism they are almost identical.

Roy Castle was in his sixties when he died, after a long and successful career. His four children were all adults too, so whilst I'm sure they mourn the loss of their father, they didn't need financial support in the way that Goody's kids do.
I tend to agree with Seeds, this is all about class.

It's not about class, or age, or who the fuck likes Boris Johnson.
The fact of the matter is, Jade Goody is a massive twat who just happens to be dying of cancer. End of.
Roy Castle was just an example I used to hilight the plight of a person (there are thousands of them out there, both celebrity and non-celebrity) who was diagnosed with a terminal disease and actually did something positive, not for himself, but for other people; in the hope that his small actions might indeed help a great many others in their dealing with a similar problem. I'm sure you'll see a few hundred of them running the London Marathon in little over a months time; Jade Goody tried one year but oh no, she didn't do a single bit of exercise for it. Yeah, good effort love.
You can sit here and argue the toss of "Oh but it's the media.. we feed the media machine.. she's a product of society.. her poor kids.. woe is her" and all of that hippy bullshit until the cows come home but the fact of the matter is Jade Goody has always been take, take and more take. Even now, on the walk to her death bed, she's taking even more money. If she's so fucking lovely, why doesn't her final act involve liquidising her assets, setting up The Jade Goody Cancer Research Fund and making her kids (albeit when/if they are of a certain educational level to manage a fund) the bosses? That might set them up for life in a better way?
Thousands of ordinary people die every day of diseases and it's a sad view of society to see so much attention shown for one person, who just so happens to be a vile specimen of that society.
end of my rant. goodbye.

+1 what chugit said.
Roy Castle is legend, he lived his life as a gent and left it as a gent.
As bad as it is, I wish Roy was still here instead of Bruce Forsyth.

Hmmm, if only he'd stayed clear of those dodgy McWhirter's he would have died without a stain. But I'm afraid it's guilt by association.....

Nobody's saying she's lovely, or deserving. But plenty of people get where they are in society without going through the full "meritocratic" treatment, disproportionately those with huge social and educational privileges. Funnily enough, most of them seem to cop a lot less flak than her.
No idea whether you or anyone you care about has been in a similar situation but I wouldn't rush to pour scorn on somebody attempting to provide for their family after their death. Under the circumstances I'd like to think I'd set up that trust you're suggesting, but, until it happens to me, I'm not sure enough of my own sanctity to know for certain.
Anyway, just to repeat: I don't think she's a very nice or important person and the media circus thing is pretty grisly. I'm sure there are "better" ways she could have dealt with her terminal illness. But dancing on her grave and huffing and puffing moral outrage at the state of modern Britain aren't the only possible responses.

Hmm, having dealt with the legacy of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation a few years ago, things aren't all as rosy as they seem.
Markyboy's comments about young women's awareness and take up rates of cervical smears are the most positive thing to come out of it, firstly for the sudden increase in young women presenting to have tests done (where previously there'd been a barrier, be it squeemishness, or lack of awareness) and secondly there's some charity* campaigning to get the NHS to lower the age criteria for scans to women of an earlier age (20s rather than a entry point of 25).
Whether you agree with a charity piggybacking on the goody is a different matter.

She's in Max Clifford's pocket.
She's spent a large part of her light living off the spotlight, to end it now would be absurd on her part. She is a celebrity whether you like it or not and because of that she will be a celebrity till the end.
It's sad but, as you said, no more sad than any other story.
Celebrity culture is bullshit, max clifford should be shot. -

Jade Goody
Why is that stupid ignorant bigoted racist making the front pages of our newspapaers and the headlines on our news shows.
When she was forced out of big brother the country spouted bile and hatred about her which was correct but know she seems to be the darling of the country, what is wrong with people out there. I dispair of our media at times.
I wonder whether she'll donate any of her ridiculous income to the charity that is helping her through these hard times or give it away to any good causes ?
Probably NOT !Sorry
Sadly everything you said above is true, but unfortunately this country is full of even bigger morons who will pay to read about shit like that, I think i've bought maybe 4 newspapers in the last 3 years and not one of them was one of those disgustingly trashy tabloids that are clinging onto this shit (ok maybe one was but the page 3 girl was hawwwt!).
I blame the balaclava wearers.
Balaclavaist.
She's terminally ill, at the age of 27 and with two young kids to support. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
I agree to an extent, but what makes her any more important than all the other cancer sufferers some of which don't even make it to their 20's, i'm all for cancer awareness and promotion of the cause, but frankly there are people out there far more deserving of media time than her, and I refuse to buy a single paper or fund her pointless life any further than it has been already by the general public.
Lots of people have cancer and I am sure the media coverage of hers is making theirs feel belittled at the moment.
Bingo! couldn't have put it better myself.

the worse thing is that Jade seemed to actually *want *to grab the spotlight, want taboid newsrag to sympathy with her situation etc. regardless of other whom are dying of cancer, beside belittling the other people who have cancers on top.

C'mon you mean bastards.
She is probably very very frightened, as any of us would be knowing we are going to die in the next few weeks/months - who knows what any of us would do to hold that fear at bay.
Poor fucking girl, I can't believe some of the comments here !

I'm not sure how i feel about Jade Goody, as i have no real idea who she is, and what her contributions to life have been.
I do however feel for any child who loses a parent at a young age - only to live on through what will be a short lived media frenzy, as we wait to see what her "legacy" may leave them.
It's all a bit wrong isn't it.
Makes me appreciate Lances quest that little bit more though. -

Jade said she wanted to spend as much time as possible she has left in the public eye, and the media are granting this wish. I find this so depressing. The idea being that the most important thing is to be on television, and that before you die you should cram as much coverage into your life as possible.
I think the media have always been more in the wrong than the BB contestants in the recent 'scandals'.
CHUGIT for PM!
