Don't be so quick to assume you know where the noise was coming from... it might *sound *like it was coming from the left pedal, but from experience it could be all sorts incl. the bottom bracket/left crank interface, the seatpost/saddle (see above) or even the seatpost in the frame.
you'd be surprised how easily sound likes to travel around a tightly set-up bike
