Anti-Puncture Tyres At-a-glance

  • How long is the ride? Seems a waste carting 32mm over 255k if only the last 5k are dirt, if you get my drift?

Have you got a photo of the surface? Most normal road tyres will probably work but it really depends HOW rough it is and if it's likely to be wet, etc.

The ride is only about 22k, and the last 5km looks like this. The main reason for my concern is my runners legs being turned to jelly over the first 17k, and then slipping and having to re-apply force to the pedals while the cranks are in a bad position.

Its only the last 5k, but at 46,8 gear inches, on a 1:8, with my pathetic legs, repeated slippage might just finish me off.

(ED: Found pic from 2005, conditions a bit more shite)

  • I've ridden on some unpaved roads in the Alps that are similar to the one in the picture on a road bike with standard 23 mm tyres on. Slippage is only an issue if you're forcing the pace and accelerating out of the saddle. If you're seated, and you probably will be, then I very much doubt you'll have any problems.

Thanks for the info. Very helpful!

Looks like I'm over-reacting a bit with the cyclo-X tyres. Would be nice to keep the weight down too.
For low class riders like myself the race is all about the first 16km anyway. The last 5 are just about not losing too much time.

  • Did you see any of the Giro last year? They had a mountain time trial at a place called Plan de Corones, the final 5 kms of which were on a dirt road. Have a look at the pictures below to see that everyone was riding standard racing tyres.

  • Looks like very similar conditions, except like I said, I wont be pushing it over the last 5.

  • Anyone knows where i can get the Soma Everwear all black at decent price? in BLB sold out i konw TFG sell them but at £40 each....

  • shit tyres, seen 2 hernias already

  • Anyone know of any good deals going for tyres + inntertubes + rim tape? Couldn't find any on Wiggle.
After great advice from you guys I am partial to Vittoria Rubinos.

  • ProBikeKit have cheap Rubino Pro. Not sure about combos, maybe Wiggle?

What Dale said, shit... Mine lasted about six weeks... Pathetic... Got an Armadillo on the back now, maybe you should look at the tyre all the polo girls are using... Marathon Plus? Up there ^^ somewhere...

  • ebay has a couple of (rubino+tube)*2 deals going at the minute.

    Disagree.
I think they are great tyre for skidding, my at the back as been there since july 08 and I have 14 skid patch still no sign of wear and I LOVE to skid around :)

  • You got a good one then, TheCrane, nosferatu and I all seem to have got dodgy ones... Caveat emptor...

  • Durano +'s are amazing, arrived last week for my geared, i will update If i get a puncture

  • Is there any recommendation on the best gumwall tyres?

  • http://www.parker-international.co.uk/11634/Vittoria-Open-Pave-EVO-CG-Folding-Tyre.html?referrer=froogle&utm_source=google&utm_medium=froogle&utm_campaign=pid11634

Might be worth including. I have some, but haven't ridden them yet. They'll go on the "best" bike if the weather forecast for Sunday looks shit, since I have a longish (50 mile) ride and Veloflex Black are not ideal for crappy conditions.

  • Is there any recommendation on the best gumwall tyres?

Panaracer Pasela TG, not a lightweight race tyre (like some veloflex gumwalls). But It is available in 23mm and they are good quality tyres. They have the usual characteristcs of a decent fast touring tyre.

  • the weight is now moot since my bike is quite light already, so I don't mind if it a little heavy, ta mate! needed something classier to suit the new bike.

  • Does that mean you'll have a randonneur going? Want to sell it?

  • Sorry, still using them, best tyres for London!

  • tooooo hard to get off :p

  • Must say I have really appreciated my conti 4 seasons.

nearly 6 months, and only a couple of puncture, generally doing 150 miles a week.

had worn through the back tyre to the beading last night so removed it, put a new tyre on the front and swapped the front tyre to the back.

the tyre i swapped had over 20 bits of glass/flint embedded but none had made any deep progress through the tyre, all fairly much just on the surface. took a while to remove all the intruders and glue up the bigger holes but am satisfied with the tyres as a purchase.

    just dont tell hippy.

  • Does anyone have any recommendations for 27" tyres? the most puncture resistant?
