Restaurant Reviews & Suggestions - Where to eat?

Wanting to take my partner out for a nice meal in a more 'upmarket' place. We normal eat out at places like Cirrik, Masala Zone and the various Vietnamese places along Mare Street. All these places are fine but I want to treat her to something special. Somewhere we can dress up.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Somewhere North preferably.

You don't mention what kind of food.
If you like French I can recommend the Almeida between Angel and Highbury and Islington just off Upper Street.
Not too pricey if you go for their lunch or pre-theatre deals.

i like eating at the eagle but it's not 'posh' moro is another favorite as is cigala on lambs conduit st.
st john, andrew edmunds, l'escargot, grt queen street restaurant all good.

i went to Saki by smithfields just before christmas. it's not super fancy but the food has been very, very good both times i've been. probably works out at about 40/50 a head.

i went to the chancery just after christmas and again had a really nice meal, again food was really good (probably a bit more wholesome than saki) inside was really nice, quiet, relaxed atmosphere. service was very very good, it's not open weekends. about 100 for two people without wine.

Moro on Exmouth Market
St Johns on St Johns St - v good if you like meat and offal, but a bit pricey!

Two good Italian restaurants in central London are Sardo and Caldesi. Apparently Sardo has a sister place a bit further north, in Primrose Hill, though never been.

If you wanted good food that is 'nice' but not too wanky...you can try The Rivington in Shoreditch or The Ivy is pretty good.

Arabtus is a great restraunt in soho....a michelin star but at a good price

The Clerkenwell Dining Room is really good...thats probably my favourtie for a nice nigth out wtih great english food and wine...relaxed atmosphere but you konw your eating somewhere nice..

anywhere on upper street is really good, lots of different places for different tastes, i particulary like cafe mercury,
i also heard mare st is good for food ;)

Ottolenghi on Upper St.

Hawksmoor on Commercial St if you want steak.

Bistrotheque near Victoria Park.

Arbutus in Soho has just got it's first Michelin star and it still reasonably priced.. The saddle of rabbit is the business

Funny that hardly anyone's recommended anywhere in North London. Its a fucking cultural desert.

Around Clerkenwell there's lots of decent food. Quality Chop House is OK. Moro was great BITD, have heard it's still excellent. St John is heaven (not all funny meat you know). I bet there's a few decent newer places, like that dining room place on Sutton something (Court or Yard - called J&M I think) looks nice, saw it in the paper at the weekend.

Upper Street is mostly crap in my opinion, never been to Ottolenghi though. Recipes look nice in the grauniad though.

Do yourself a favour. Go to Moro.

yeah there's loads of meh around there.. Fredericks is quite nice near Angel down in the cobbled market bit

The Marquees Tavern is nice around there, but a bit away from Upper Street...

I've never been to any of these places but I'm eating broccoli from the Ottolenghi cookbook Right Now and it's the best thing in the world. When I have more than 3 quid to spend on dinner, I will be going there.

look at thr vietnamese restaurant in crouch end, they're a few nice asian restaurants theres dude, theres one called 'Khoai Cafe) the food there is really nice, theres also a nice italian there called 'Sosta' got voted for excellent food by the Evening standard, also theres a nice siccilian restaurant in muswell hill along the promenade called 'Cilicia', thats also very nice, i go there with the missus sometimes, but these are the main ones i go to that are all resonably nice but affordable

The food's the business. Actually, not all is within the M25(I know it's what he tried to do though), think it's about 75%

Get to know the chef Fai. Everytime I go in now, I bell him up before and he knocks up some delights not on the menu! Had a few lock ins in there too - cuban cigars, brandy the lot! Good nights out

i heard about that place, someone else was talking about it the other day, got a couple of korean friends and they've just introduced me to their food over the short time i've known them and it really is nice, theres a good one near dean street called 'Jin' and another little one around the corner from the 'john snow' (cant rememnber the name though)that i go to, they're something to try if you like 'Spicy, burn yer tongue,take it out and stamp on it' hot kinda food ;)

Korean is good, there's a decent one on the corner of Gt Marlborough St and Poland St, name esapes me though
DEFO go to Little Hanoi though, Fai'll normally come out and ask how the food is - get to know him and he'll be your best mate for life! :-)
He always kicks off big time when they turn the music up downstairs at Plastic People(best and loudest soundsystem in London) :-)
I've actually been in the queue a few times and he's come out and kicked off with the bouncers "turn the fuckin music down"!!
