  • After noticing the interest in learning to build wheels I have decided to put my skills to work. If anyone wants to know how then PM me. (ive built dozens of track/ road/ mtb wheels and im DT Swiss qualified)

Also if anyone just wants wheels built I will happily do so, Undercutting shop prices of course. Turnaround could usually be next day if required for 2 wheels.

Maybe should have posted this in Classified and shopping, but hey-ho.

  • Im also happy to give anyone advice on choices of components, as a have fairly good experience building with most popular choices. Just out the goodness of my little heart like :)

Hi Pat, sounds good to me. I'm taking delivery of a DT RR1.2 rim later this week and have a Phil 32h rear to get laced up. Would be interested in hearing more. PM me if you are still up for it.

  • HI

great idea - I'd be well up for some tuition on this, let me know if and when you plan a session so I can get some parts in.

    cheers

  • Likewise.

  • DT swiss qualified is that like being CORGI registered?

  • this sounds interesting

i was gonna build my own recently but chickened out when a good deal came along on a complete pair

  • Also interested in learning how to build wheels.
    Have PMd you.

  • i do wheels £10 a go and i'll let you watch for free. no touching though.

  • OK. Question.

Were is the best place online to get 29r rims.
Preferably disc only with a fat bead width.

CRC have SunRingle EQ27 (bead width 25mm) for just under £40 each.
I'd love a pair of Velocity Blunts, but can only find them on US sites.

    Cheers ;)

  • I'm looking to build my own front wheel soon... would you help/ or teach me how to do it??

  • Did anything come of this?

Pat - are youyr services still available?

if not - anyone else out there with the master skills to build a wheel? or can anyone advise on the best place to buy a fixed/free wheel??

    cheers

    J

  • i'm in Archway and can do it if you get the stuff

  • ok,

you'll have waver your frustration but......... stuff?

flipflop hub? rim? spokes? all you need? possible to do it on a budget? how much do you charge?

  • £10, plus £8 if i have the right length spokes. otherwise you need to supply rim and hub.

  • i have just completed building my own wheels, did the front wheel radial which was pretty easy, the rear wheel took me quite some time to get it true (taken all the spokes out a few times after i found out my keyspoke was in the wrong hole) all in all it was quite fun to do, i ordered a new rear wheel hub and i am gonna do it again this time in a few hours i hope :)

Not sure where you can get them online, but look at Bontrager Duster rims (27mm wide and offset spoke holes) or Salsa Gordos.

  • Have looked at the Salsa gordos. Very popular, due to there strengh, 700g though :(

Like the look of the Salsa Semi's (did'nt realise they did these in 29", found while search for Gordos just now). 30mm width and 575g.

Havent seen the Bontrager dusters, other than on built wheels,

will have a look around tinternet for both, cheers.

  • i just sold some halo freedom 29ers, as there was a stuff up with my hubs. built them up for the buyer, came out nice.

did you come to a conclusion about their strength?

  • the 36H were suprisingly laterally stiff, especially with the a 4 cross building. the nipples floated around a bit in the eyelets and took a bit to bed in. apart from that i think they are good value at ~£32

  • Hi Pat, bit of a noob to this but looking for a pair of wheels to replace the current ones on my bike. I'm on 700c free wheel and looking to spend about £100 - problem is i'll need the full package - tyres, tubes, hubs etc. I just use the bike to get to and from work (Holloway to Holborn) so after something solid and not too flash. Is that do-able or should i just see if someone just has a spare pair? I know the back is 18t freewheel and thats about it.

    Thanks for your help

  • dogsballs .. how much are you charging for building a pair of wheels and where is the drop off?

  • £10, archway

  • Anyone who is genuinely interested please PM me as I rarely look at this thread. Apologies to anyone who's shown interest over the last few weeks. Ive now got all my equipment together. I can do builds FRI/SAT pretty much any week though im on the continent a weekend of every month.

Ideally people can pop over to Putney and I can bang out a couple of wheels in a hour or so. I can get spokes any size but gimme a bit of notice. Otherwise just PM me to setup a date.
If you want 2 wheels built i am happy to charge £10 per.
