In the 70's in Mexico they had a gas leak which caught fire, they found people who had been burnt to death upto 300 metres away, and their pipes are half the size of ours but their regulations are pitiful compared to ours also. Luckily there hasn't been a similar incident in the UK.
The police woman probably had good reason not to let you through.
