no it just help the person who got their bike stolen, someone here have their bike stolen twice, until he realise it's actually the choice of lock he use (twice) that what made it easier for the theft to cut it (they were colourful 10 quid chain lock).
-
• #1353
lock used was in hindsight not really adequate, it was two chain and key ones, one made by Oxford (£20) and the other from halfords (£10) I guess bolt cutters would laugh at the pair of them. I guess next time its some heavy weigh more than the bike itself kryptonite D locks with insurance garuantees on them.

Speaking of Krypto lock guarantees... anyone had much luck with them?
For some unknown reason, despite using them for years, I've always assumed that they would be a red tape nightmare?

i don't think that you should blame the victim** on this thread**. people should buy a good lock for a good bike, if they don't... well they come here to ask for their bike back and hopefully they get it back. and hopefully they learn another lesson 'to buy a good lock'. if they don't well they end up here again. their problem not yours.
-
• #1356
yeah, i don't really understand th whole 'how was it locked' business.
-
• #1357
its important to share knowledge on how the bike is locked, where it was locked etc so we can all learn from each others mistakes.
-
• #1358
how was it locked = i don't want to be caught out the same way.
We always tell people to avoid certain junctions, paths, parks in the same manner. Its not because were having a go at the victim, it's because we all want to know if the lock 'we' use and the method, is up to the job. -
• #1359
+1... i read this thread for two reasons, one being so I can keep an eye out for any of the bikes in question. To be honest though it's mainly for the selfish reason that if I see that one has been lifted from any postcodes I frequent, with an Abus and a Krypto D split open - I know that I need to raise my game!

Well I was kinda suggesting that a 'broken locks' list might be genuinely useful. Not volunteering btw, not on here often enough. ;-)

SHould I mention that my ABUS Granite steeloflex withstood a leverage attack?
bike was locked by front wheel and frame to a sheffield stand.
Thieves twisted the frames around twice and tried to pop the lock with the leverage.
Succeeded in bending the forks (on-one superlight steel), breaking v-bosses and denting rim.
Lock is kinked but works.
Looked mangled because it was twisted round so much. plastic sleeve has split in places. -

NICE ONE ED.
I;'m free tonight if he wants to go meet the seller. -
• #1367
You probably won't fall off your seat, but the picture on gumtree is one of the first google image hits if you type in 'wilier pista'!, that bike on gumtree belongs to someone in australia.
Couldn't be a dodgier gumtree ad if they tried. Hoping for a safe recovery of the bike and a long painful reminder for the theif.

I could scream, thanks for all the help, let me know what the next stage is. Im thinking of becoming a stolen bike vigilante
-
• #1373
yeah its already been removed. Worse luck.
Maybe we should just contact the 'victim' in future and not post sus ads if we think we know the owner.
Is this thread in private?
-
• #1374
Is it possible to put another ad up on gumtree in the bicycle section, noting it's a stolen bike, using the same pic from velospace?
'IF' it's actually been sold, the buyer may re-check gumtree.
