its actually 60quid on the spot for running a red light
its 30 quid for not having either front/rear light. 60quid for not having any lights. They give ya a ticket on the spot.
If you run, just make sure you are quick, very quick. It's not as severe here in Cambridge, we have one of the lousiest police services in the country but London i would presume has tough policemen who will bust a cap in ya' ass to make sure you dont run again.
Funny that as I got fined £30 see thread on "What do you say ...." and was told it'd be £60 if I didn't pay in 28 days. Payed my fine, said I was sorry, end of.

Yup, royal parks are different and very expensive, otherwise it's £30.
Those corgis need to be fed.

On Fri I saw a guy on what looked like fixie being pursued on threadneedle st by a city of london skoda with blue lights on - the police driver looked v serious about apprehending the cyclist - maybe a slow day - he chased him up to a slow moving traffic and it looked like the cyclist got away.... so as above,if you are going to run, ideally do it in traffic!

Radio ahead and if your unlucky and there are more up th road, they will block you off. It's happened to me in the city, I got blocked off at the "Ring of steal".
The City of London police are completely seperate from the Met and are much more likely to nick you (for cycling offences, or for being pissed). There is hardly any street crime in The City so the uniformed plod have a lot more time on their hands. They're also funded differently so they've got a lot more resources than other police forces. You can end up spending the night in Wood Street for things that the Met wouldn't even slow their car to look at.

Did it going up Brixton Hill on the pavement once. Other side of road was those spaccy Community Officers shouting, I just kept going.....what they gonna do?
Shoot you to death, hopefully. I know you won't mind me saying this....

i failed to stop and they got a van to chase me down sirens blaring, managed to talk my way out of an arrest they took my details and said they were going to let the CPS deal with me and to expect a letter and probably a fine. i'm still waiting and this was before christmas now. next time my escape route will be better planned, ie through heavier traffic, dunno whether they'd try and follow you on cctv and catch up with you. this is when having a very distinctive bike covered in hideous neon with neon rims is a disadvantage.

had some pcso's try to land me with a £70 for rinding onto the pavement and getting off. Apparently the dismount should take place on the road. Thank christ for having the 'i'm a broke art student' alibi on standby.

i had a police motorbike follow me down the pavement through some back alleys and through a pedestrian area while trying to evade him when he eventually put on the siren and used the loudspeaker on his bike i decided to pull over
they are persistent ! -

......don't understand all this alarm about trying to get away and evade the police stopping you all it does is escalate a situation, wouldn't it be cheaper (and safer!) to fit front and rear lights when riding after dark and maybe not to "jump" the lights when red even if the road acrossways is empty?
scratching my head at the logic of this reasoning! -

scratching my head at the logic of this reasoning!its out of our control sometimes. the police have a habit of assuming they saw certain things, then fabricating laws/fines as appropriate.

my mate, thecrane went past a red light in liverpool st. and carried on going, a police van then proceeded to turn on its sirens and chase him down the road until he decided to pull over, they then arrested him for having no ID and no proof of not being a terrorist and was taken down to the station.
sometimes u can get away though just maybe not when its a police vehicleit wasn't until i decided to pullover. i was forced into the hard shoulder. and i probly could have gotten away with out getting nicked, but i think they thought i had drugs on me or coz i said something they didn't like.
fucking piggies wasting my time. i was in a cell for near 2 hours and in the end they didnt even print check me they just phoned my mum to check i wasn't a terrorist.
such pricks over absolutely nothing

traffic lights are designed for traffic (cars and vans) not cycles.
city of london police have a programme to fine cyclists (operation 'something')- so you only really need to be careful in a pretty limited area of the city:
http://www.cityoflondon.police.uk/CityPolice/SaferCityWards/YourCityWard/Wards/in the rest of london police couldn't be bothered with finign cyclist for jumping lights.

<< traffic lights are designed for traffic (cars and vans) not cycles. >>
that's a bit naive are we not traffic as well, where in the Highway Code does it mention cyclists are exempt? if we all choose to legally share the same bit of road then we all respect the rule of the road, they're there for a reason (and no, I'm not ol' Bill I'm an everyday cyclist!)

this post started of cos i couldnt believe it
now my opinion has changed and i realise how serious it is, i would still try and get away though, i dont have the money to pay up,
what are the cycle lanes like were you are?? thats to every one btw
i was working in Hornchurch once and they had a cycle lane on one of the main roads which was ridiculous, i had my wheels about 2-3 inches away from the curb and my handle bars still stuck out over the line (standard mtb handlebars
i did get clipped by a white van which i thought broke my arm (luckily it didnt) and it winded me a bit, so now i ride on the pavement down that stretch or road because its too dangerous. im not getting flattened for no one
ive been fined 60* for running a red light, in Cambridge though
i was pretty unfortunate cause i was running a really old beater at the time and the chain snapped as i tried to pull away quickly. :)
*if anyone asks, my name is Mark Collins ;)
