Actually, I think it depends on whether you live in West London or East London--most shops here seem to stock 'houmous', whereas I've seen 'hummus' in West London ...
('Houmous' is the Greek spelling, whereas 'hummus' is used elsewhere, in the Lebanon, I think. The word, aside from spelling, remarkably, is the same everywhere in the Mediterranean, although recipes vary slightly.)
Out of interest, Isabella, is there any houmous used in Southern Italian cookery at all? I've never come across it in Italian cooking--or, for that matter, in Spanish cooking or southern French cooking.
