interestingly (from those stats) we have a 400% increase on new unique visits but the average time spent on site has dropped by 10%. i wonder what it sees as active time? if you leave the browser open but in the background is the connection still in place?

I think the increase in unique visitors + drop in time spent is probably explained by the jump in lfgss.com in google search results for almost everything you can ever imagine wanting to search. When you're after specific information (rather than just browsing) you spend less time on each site.
