  • About 10 years ago I was living in Trondheim, working as a caretaker at the University.
I lived in a basement flat in a tiny eastate on the side of a mountain a couple of kilometers outside of the city center.
There was nothing between the group of houses and the city apart from a road, used mainly by goods vehicles.

I was waiting for the bus in the worse weather I had ever experianced (-18, gale force winds), when, because of the snow storm, the bus drove right past without seeing me.
I (stupidly) decided to start walking along the road, thinking that I might be able to get a lift. I figured that my Norwegian boss would'nt consider cold weather a good reason not to come to work. This was, in fact, incredibly stupid, as when, after a walking about a kilometer, a lorry did come, it had no chance of seeing me. I dove off the road to aviod being hit, over a crash barrier, rolled in the snow and landed painfully against some trees. Below these trees was cliff face and then the north sea. In a state of shock, and full of snow, I climbed back up to the road, and somehow made it to work an hour late. Coming in the door I was nearly in tears, and could barely stand.
"you're late!" my boss says with out looking up.
"missed bus, walked in, very cold, had accident" I mumbled, my jaw completely seized.
"what in this weather, crazy Englishman, you trying to get yourself killed. You should have stayed at home!"

Not so much HTFU but UYFH (Use Your F**king Head).
