There's still a lot of ice on side roads that haven't been salted.
Still, small crashing incident apart, that was the most fun commute I've ever had. MTB with low pressure in knobblies...
Clapham common, Battersea Park, Hyde Park and the canal - crunchy snow, even still some fresh patches. Ace. Lovely and sunny, snowmen everywhere and not having to run the gauntlet of snowballs like yesterday.
Even looking forward to the slushy ride home.

Main road from East to West was fine, not much passing space, loads of black ice on the edges, worse patch was the new junction at the Thobalds road/Drake street, was gonna pass a bus to get to the front, thought it was slush but maybe ice, so stopped, other chap wizzed passed and did a face plant, poor bugger, think he was ok, he said he was!

there are some quiet dodgy bits around peckham rye, so keep an eye out people (especially given how many 'south london' bus drivers there around there).

Our grandparents fought in the War so that you could cycle on roads like greased otters, and this is the way you thank them?
very true sir, I ought to be flagellated with a dead greased otter for my offence...
took me 45 mins to get from victoria to gunnersbury on the disshit line...never again

make sure you wash your bike with a hot water and re-grease it (salt will eat shit out of the bike, it is so punishing to plastic or rubber seals, paint, etc. also it changes grease consistensy)

well my bike was fine yesterday. perhaps because i got the fresh snow in the morning that froze all over the bike, protecting from salt etc.

be kind to your bike dude, follow my advice :) i grew up in North East EU, and a reason why we are not riding bikes on a salty roads is that it fcuks it up (for exmpl: when people buy car back there they want to know how many winters it spent on the road - i know it sounds funny, like native american lol - (q:"how old are you" a: "26 summers" :)

i went for a ride yesterday evening having in mind that salt will clean off my bike old grease and dirt... when got back home washed it with hot water, regreased it and it came out clean... salt accelerates (probably causes it) corrosion as you know

Beautiful. Doesn't even look like the London I know, and I've lived here nearly 25 years.

it made me smile as i edged over the icy path in Clapham seeing all the snow men/ big balls of snow looked like some sort of icy boulder filed.

Yeah, hard on the side roads, main ones clear apart from the odd bit which hadn't gritted.
Salt is shit but snow is lovely, transforming landscapes
