  • I know this sounds like such a basic thing, but its really pissing me off.

I got a brand new Scram1 chain a couple of weeks ago. all of a sudden i noticed it had rusted like fuck and was really squeeky!

I took it off, soaked it in degreaser and scrubbed it with an old toothbrush, then gave it a decent amount of dry wax lube.

took it out in the rain and overnight it had gone back to its rusty condition.

ive never ever had a chain rust like that ever!

is this happening because its a cheap chain?

  • clean and re-lube the chain after getting it wet....

  • not because its a cheap chain then? i never had any rust on my kmc chain and that went through alot

  • also dry wax lube isn't that good for wet conditions.

  • it's from all the salt and shite on the roads, mine did the same this year, get a new one .

  • i thought wax lube was better because stuff i.e. water and salt doesnt stick to it so much as wet lube?

  • by dry lube do you mean WD40/GT88?
If so, you have been BAD!
    get some proper chain oil.

i cant be arsed to explain this, so here's a brief explanation from that wonderful invention, the interweb.....

"WD-40 was developed by the military in the 50s as a rust preventative solvent and de-greaser to protect missile parts. It quickly became a household item when people discovered it had thousands of other uses as a cleaner, rust-prevention agent, squeak-stopper and more. It also works wonders as a light lubricant on small items like hinges, locks, and toys.
Bicycle chains, on the other hand, are far too heavy and fast-moving for the lubricating power of WD-40 to have any effect at all. As a matter of fact, WD-40 will actually strip away any existing lubricant and leave your drivetrain dry - metal on metal. Basically, spraying this stuff on your chain is worse than using no lubricant at all!"

i just use GT88 after i've cleaned my chain, before i put it on my bike. when it's on the bike i put some chain oil on.

  • Water Dispersant 40

    it's not a lubricant…

  • where does muleboy say he uses WD40/GT85?

"then gave it a decent amount of dry wax lube."

    like pedro's ice wax

  • best result i've had is by cleaning the chain then lubing up with loads of wet stuff and leaving on radiator overnight wrapped in kitchen towel. Its semi-dry in the morning when you put it on and takes ages before it clogs up again. Dry stuff just doesn't seem to last/work.

i re-read the first post twice to see if i missed something too.

    @spagbole, WTF??

  • my helmet keeps getting wet n sticky

  • @op - how much wax lube did you use? you're supposed to let it accumulate quite thickly before it works well. i'd recommend oyu just get a new chain and start using phil tenacious oil or pedros syn lube. much easier to maintain.

  • Vegetable oil FTW.

  • Haha no i'm not using DW-40 as a chain lube!

I used finish line degreaser and then the finish line lube.

My method for applying it was to rotate the cranks with the nozzle of the bottle on the chain so that it got all over and then put some on the chainring and sprocket

  • Vegetable oil FTW.

    you joker

  • Use the wet finish line... it works well me thinks.. but it does need a re-lube every few days if it's raining..

  • To stop your chain rusting, take it off the bike and either scoot or buy a belt-drive.

  • I let my chain rust.. so it looks like spag's bike (Sano's old rusty thing).
Gets me loads of east-side cred, it does.

    Oh, and what DaveH said.

  • I used to use gear oil from halfords for winter lubrication, but that shit is hard to get off your chain and stinks...

    clean and lube chain regularly

I quite like the wax based lubes, after wet ride, re-apply.

  • WD40 ain't great

  • quit riding and buy yourself a car

  • thanks for all the advice, but this chain has really got to me and i've decided to give up on bicycles. My friend is selling a mirco scooter so i think i'll get into that scene
