  • 50 miles sounds good. As I recall, I spent most of that heady first summer doing 50-60 mile rides out of London. Lovely way to spend a weekend. Ride to Oxford, ride to Cambridge, ride to Windsor, ride to Brighton, ride to Canterbury, or just pick a compass point and see where you end up. Just don't ride to Eastbourne.

Very sound advice that. Were you the youngest person in town by a good 50 years?

  • ^ ageist

  • Someone made a lovely short film about the 08 ride but I can't find it online.

With a spiffing looking orange bike at the 55 second mark and again near the end just before tommy's interview :0)

I'd rather not talk about it.

    shudder

  • Believe me, I would much prefer to be sweating and panting in a pro plus/Red Bull induced haze than dressed up to the nines in a posh tent with crap music with a bunch of people who I have failed to get to know in the seven years that she has been at the school and who I am not likely ever to see again and, at the end of the evening having to drive drunken wife and two daughters back to London in the wee small hours after witnessing teenaged girls in emotional outbursts over leaving the "freinds" about whom they have been bitching since they were 11.

Full fry up on the beach ftw.

Sadly in 2010 I have to do it all again for my younger daughter. Same time same place (unless the little angel can conspire to have herself expelled).

Beautiful. An entire story in three sentences!

Re other comments - you should be okay as long as you sleep well the night before and take plenty of proper (and varied) nourishment. It's not too hilly and the pace isn't too harsh (unless you choose it to be, of course). I made it most of the way there fine but bonked at the end because I was sick of the only type of food I had brought and so hadn't eaten enough of it...

  • Great. Thanks for the encouragement - I think I'm going to do it!

  • Sadly Oliver, I'll be in Ascot until gone 1:00 am and then have to drive said drunken spouse and off spring back to London.

Start from Ascot on one of these and you should be at Dunwich in time for breaky.

  • But where will Clive find six mates to ride it with him?

Oh, and if you need practice riding at night, these monthly rides (mostly to Brighton) are great fun, and brilliantly organized.

  • But where will Clive find six mates to ride it with him?

Oliver, for a vegan, you can be very cruel.

    Not only for a vegan ... ;)

  • ooooh i'll actually be back home for this... but will hardly have ridden much this year, never mind trained. hmpf. could just do it and not walk for a few days!

least you'll still be able to cycle.

this time i'll think i'll cycle back - quicker and cheaper than a bus, you also don't need to worry about missing any scenery by going quick becuase you'll get a second look on the way back! although traffic may be an issue....hmmm

  • hobo + mattty.
i'd be up for some longer rides, i'm hoping brighton gets sorted again...

We were planning to go there overnight on Saturday/Sunday, but the current forecast looks dire, snow and ice, unfortunately.

Rather put off by icy conditions, myself. Did a couple of laps of Richmond Park at the weekend (plus 15 miles each way getting there & back), which was fun. Will probably be doing the same this Sat (conditions pending) if anyone fancies joining me.

Am also thinking about riding to Bristol / Oxford / Cambridge once the weather gets a little nicer if anyone's interested. I am quite slow though :)

  • Ah, the Dunwich. I've ridden it the last three years:
2006 was pretty wet and cold but fun with a good group of 8 friends (none of whom have done it again after 2005 and 2006 were both wet.
2007, when I rode on my own, was fucking awful. Very wet, and I had the wrong tyres - 13 punctures in total (6 between London and Dunwich, 7 between Dunwich and Ipswich)
2008 was dry and lovely but very hard work as I was much less fit than previous years.

Each year I ride to Ipswich so including to/form home that makes it about 170 miles in total. Not sure I can do it this year as my wife is due to have a baby on 08 July! If the baby is early and I am allowed out of the house (VERY unlikely), I'll hopefully do this, but will definitely extend my route to either do 300km or 200 miles.

  • @ matty, some of us are doing laps of richmond park as preparation for the track season starting at herne hill. someones there most saturdays, start time is either 9.30 or 10.30 depending on how lazy people are being that week. check this thread out and head on down

  • Last year was a lot of fun and I think its time to start getting ready for this years one.

So who's in for a long, long night ride then full english and beers on the beach?

I shall look forward to racing you along the last 20miles ;) lets just not take a wrong turning this time!!

Sounds like a plan! I'm bringing Angel Delight this time!!!

  • Not gonna read through the thread so apologies if this has been suggested, but we should do an LFGSS meet beforehand. Obviously everyone will quickly break up as they find their pace, but it'd be nice to show a bit of solidarity to the ride-at-large. Shame we don't have the LFGSS jerseys yet!

  • We started the last two in a big group of lfgss riders. It lasted about 100m outside the park :)

But we regrouped and split and regrouped and stuff all the way along the ride. More so last year when it wasn't every man for himself trying to get out of the rain.

Always the best way to ride it. But yes, good idea to meet up for beers at the start, so that we'll recognize each other when we pass 50 miles down the road. (Can't wait, can't wait...)

  • It'd be cool if we could get a consistent clothing choice happening.. everyone wear bright green or a pink tutu or something.. just so we have a swarm of forum members along the way..
