i do find listening to music quite distracting when riding especially when having to concentrate on vehicles/traffic around me. but when it's quieter, probably pendulum and final fantasy.

i would HTFU mate..... but i prefer to hear the traffic after having all my front teeth smashed out in july and having a nice £5k dental bill to have to take legal action to reclaim.... so il stick to music in the sticks please :-0
You don't mention what you were doing that would have been safer without music?
Every crash I've had has been unrelated to hearing except in the cases where it was someone relying too much on thier hearing.

nargoroth.
Word!
Autokratz, Coffins, We are Wolves, datA!, Fake Blood at the moment, and some classic rock.
For really getting into your stride, there is not a single song that beats Detroit Rock City by Kiss. Word is bond.

I don't tend to listen on the commutes as not being able to hear what's around scares the bejesus out of me (white vans aiming for my elbows etc) but on the weekends/real early mornings or late nights:
Backpacker Hip Hop (Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common)
Tittsworth mixes or other Baltimore Club (Blaqstarr more often than not)
Minimal/fidget mixes (Daniel Steinberg, Solo, HiJack)Nothing better than cruising through backstreets at 6.00am listening to B-Boy Document. Except being in bed.

I don't rely on my ears at all when cycling, mainly because I have some minor hearing loss that makes it hard for me to define certain sounds, especially in noisy enviroments, I do feel I have pretty damn good peripheral vision though I think derived from many years of juggling and quite a bit of snowboarding, weirdly though whenever i'm snowboarding I ALWAYS listen to music, love it love it love it, but when i'm on a bike i'd have to crank the tunes up alot more than usual to hear everything clearly, and its not something I feel comfortable doing when my hearing is not great already. Over time i've adapted by being able to fill in bits of words that I don't quite hear etc during conversations, I have about a 8% hearing loss mostly in the mid range frequencies, which sometimes requires to me ask people to repeat things, but generally I can understand most people just fine, if there is alot of background noise though it drives me insane.
However a typical soundtrack for me when i'm riding my snowboard would be:
Amon tobin - The foley room
Buzzcocks - singles going steady
DJ Shadow - Entroducing
Pink Floyd - Various (i've got a few of their albums)
Various bits of Motown, soul, funk etc :) -

Besides, I kinda like the sounds from the urban jungle, there is something almost familiar and calming about it.....

I have in-ear headphones and still hear traphic, even turned fairly high.
I'm ok with noises but bad with words. Might be slightly word-deaf methinks because I also have to get people to repeat things. Maybe it's just coz english isn't my first lingo...meh... -

Anyone who listens to music while trying to to ride in London is an absolute dick. Sometimes your ears are all you have.
^^^subtle thread hijackery. But you won't draw me into this game of yours!
