  • It's all too easy to drop a hard drum beat and a repetitive tune and call it drum & bass. 'Intelligent' d&b has influences from funk, soul, jazz and house, and plays much more on the melody and harmony than simply having a banging bassline.

I think the intelligent bit came out of the fact that it was much better structured and it was clear a lot more time, thought and effort went into making it.

As Donut! has said, LTJ Bukem did a lot of this stuff, but there were plenty of others doing the same thing in different ways. When I've had a bit of trip down memory lane, I'll post some links (if I can find any) to stuff that defines 'intelligent' for me.

It doesn't matter much to me though on whether there's a scene or not - if it's good music, it'll still be good music 10, 15, 20 and 30 years later.

If I take the time to find some good stuff, will you promise to be a bit more open-minded and refrain from posting the cliche-ridden and ill-thought-out stuff you posted earlier?
