  • If I'm looking for a second hand fixed gear bike on eBay, what should i look for?

much too big a question: depends what you want, for example, and how much you have to spend. use the search function ^ up there^ to look at what has been written about frames, wheels, etc; it'll take some time but you will learn a lot and then people will be able to give you more specific advice. the only thing everyone will tell you is DO NOT BUY A UNIPAK, the £200 or so ones that are always being sold on e-bay: search Unipak and you'll see why.

  • Hi,

I am new round these here parts. Just sold my motorbike and moved to pedal power for commuting (or hope to at least). I am going to build a bike over the next few weeks on a fairly tight budget, so any tips would be greatly appreciated (though I will of course be trawling these forums looking for tips rather than bugging people with new threads - where i can help it).

1 question that has been bothering me though, is that I am 6 foot 1 and 14.5 stone so I am worried about using a normal road frame and thin tyres for, I hope, obvious reasons. If someone knows a decent type or make of frame that would take me give me a shout or leave a reply.

    Cheers,
    Matt.

  • Don't worry. I'm the same weight and it's not unheard of!

  • second hand plug mebbe?

don't worry too much about the weight, you'll lose it as you start riding.

  • hello
im new here. already been on a fgss ride on a cough cough geared trek. that got stolen just before christmas so now i have a raleigh fixed gear conversion, trying to get my fittness back up to a reasonable standard after chrimbo feastings and the lack of a bike.
hopefully meet some of you soon at the next north ride- i'll be the sweaty panting one pushing my bike up the hills.

  • Hi all,

Just bought a flip flop hub track bike myself, one of the best things i have ever bought. Great for the fitness and its unbelievably quick.

I am absolutely loving my new bike and now I'm looking forward to getting involved with some of the meets that people are doing as they sound like a good crack.

Welcome! You're coughing a bit, hope you get your fitness back soon.

Watch out for a sweaty back. I'm told it happens when you wear a backpack.

Thankyou, I knew it was but didn't want to blow my own trumpet.

Look forward to chatting with you all soon and posting constructive i hope messages. please don't persecute from lack of terminology I am still learning about it all.

  • Greetings....I am currently of no fixed in the abode, sadly (Wheels nicked last year)

    +1

Not for actually having no fixed in the abode :( but for the quality of the expression.

  • Hi all,

I thought i'd introduce myself now i finally have my fixed on the road!

Names Adam, i've been commuting/getting into cycling more seriosly over the last year or two.

I started by buying a Claude Butler Urban 300 (new), which i rode for a good 6 months before i had a collision with a car and the bike was ruined.

I then decided that a road bike was the way to go, as i wanted to commute 40 miles a day. So i saved up and bought a 1 year old Trigon Road Bike. Its a full carbon frame, fork, seatpost and seat with a dura-ace/fsa carbon pro groupset. It came with 50mm deep carbon rims (rear is being rebuilt with front in the spring). This is currently my daily ride (although im not currently commuting).

I also bought a project MTB bike from ebay, which turned out to be a nightmare to finish off. It came with pace forks, with a stupidly short steerer, so i have replaced these with kona p2s which are supprisingly good. The bike has a full XT groupset with Spinergy carbon wheels. IMO its one of the ugliest bikess around, but i love it (now that it actually runs well!).

More importantly, i have just (today) put together my Fixie! Its a dolan frame, with shimano 600 cranks, HED rear carbon disc wheel, trigon front 50mm deep carbon wheel (both tubs), ITM aero bars and a front brake.

The bike is still WIP, but is almost there. New pedals (SPD-SLs) will be fitted once im a little more confident with breaking and the bars will be regripped soon.

Just ridden it for the first time today and its incredible (ly scary). On a few occasions i tried to freewheel, and nearly had an almightly crash when i tried to move to the extension bars, whilst trying to freewheel, in traffic!

    Well, im off to go out of the fixed again, but here are some pics of my current bikes;

Ignore pedals on Roadbike, they are being replaced with SPD-SLs

    Carbon ones I hope?

  • Slack chain. ;)

  • aserota - Not sure I like the colour of your car. What flavour is it?

  • Thought I would say hello, I've just recently built up an old dawes frame which I think dates from the '70s. I've got a flip flop track hub and am currently funning it free - just need to build up the courage to run it fixed. Loving the ride so far, single speed is a revalation compared to riding my mtb with slicks.

  • My first post on the forum, been lurking on and off for a while...

So on Friday night I was riding home, saw some dodgy looking fella's on the bridge I normally take so I decided to take the cycle path that goes the same way. Little did I know it was covered in icy and hella slippery, by the time I realised it was too late and I was already at quite a speed. Went down like a sack of shit and slid for some distance with my bike bouncing around on top of me. I came off fairly lightly but after closer inspection today my bike didn'e fare too well.

Both rims are dented and buckled and both tyres have gashes in them, I presume from hitting the ground so hard it pushed the rim through the tyre. Looks like I'm going to have to get two new wheels and a set of tyres.

I've just replaced the bars and lever and my pedals and bottom bracket need replacing anyway so I'll have practically replaced everything on the bike apart from the frame and forks within a few weeks.

Anyone know of decent bike shops in Bristol? I'm fairly new to the area, I've been going to a place called Strada on North Street.

  • Been lurking and not posting myself. Now taht I got the chance to write something I managed to fcuk it up....wrote a long post an dthen got logged out and lost it :O(

http://www.mud-dock.co.uk/ is good. In case of Emergency, check Evans down on the Horsefair. Bike, on University Row (oppo Habitat) always did me alright back in the day, and there's a semi-decent place at the bottom of Park Street. If you're coming down the hill, it's on the left, just before the steps onto Forgmore Street. Used to be called Bike Tech but not sure if it is now.

    Hope that helps

  • Hello London Fixed Gear!

A few of my friends have been riding fixed gear bikes for the last year or so and I've spent the last 6 months or so spending far too much time drooling over all the amazing custom track bikes I keep seeing around London.

I reckon I've just about saved up enough to get myself on the road, and I'm in the process of making final decisions as to what I should get.

Been to Condor, spoke to the guys at Tour de Ville and Tokyo Fixed Gear, and so far met lots of very helpful, knowledgable, friendly people...

Any advice for a new fixed rider would be most welcome!

    Cheers!

    BB.
