@coppiThat - Tony Doyle a gentleman? Are you having a laugh?
when i was a wee kid i chose to do cycle racing as my sport instead of football,,, i was different. anyway for my games lesson i got taken to herne hill stadium and every week before the cycle lesson started tony doyle would be there doing motor paced training. lap after lap tucked in behind the derny. if the bus was early i would just stand by the edge of the track mesmerised by him whizzing around in his adidas eddy merckx cycling shoes. as he was doing his laps he would always look over smile and give a little hello nod in my direction when he saw me each week, then his eyes would switch back to the back of the derny rider.....focussed.
he was never too busy or rushed to talk. once when we were in the changing room and i was probably bothering him asking him loads of questions and stuff maybe about him winning the world pursuit championship he didnt once look bored or annoyed, after he gave me one of his kp crisps viscount cotton hats. i probably still have it somewhere, probably faded from being washed a zillion times and probably with some loose stitching.
so,, its for showing that level of decency , encorouragement and patience with an in-awe snotty nosed school kid who was just starting to get interested in cycle racing that i refer to tony doyle mbe as a gentleman.you get me?
