  • All the top performing rollers are now using the drops. This appears to differ from the advice that I was originally given about using the tops to open my lungs.

In order to keep it simple, hands on top of the bars is what we tell inexperienced racers.
There is another technique/position that is more difficult to master. Simon Jackson showed it to me and explained why it worked. It has certainly made a difference to my best time, if it did take me a while to get right. There are a few others that have improved using this position too, Hillbilly for one.

If you put your hands on the drops it is possible to carry most of your weight with your arms and very little with your legs. Placing yourself forwards on the tip of the saddle brings your hips over the BB, helping you to spin faster. This replicates a good TT body position.

Some people naturally have a super fast cadence. BJ, Iwan Thomas are olympic grade athlete's (runners) and are a mark above all us amateurs. Craig Mclean didn't make the Olympic team and is faster than the runners, his cadence was approaching 260 when he posted 18.84 on the rig. God knows what Chris Hoy would do if he gave it a propper shot, I know he can reach 300 rpm on a special cadence training bike.
