definitely worth it, when roberto and i went last year there was a ton of good stuff - got a full set of frame tapping and facing tools with a headset press and crownrace setter for £90. Wiggin's family were down selling all his old gear for peanuts, all while the british team are training on the velodrome around you... get in with a seller though for the early pass and the pick of the tables...

Indoors. Takes up the whole of the track centre so lots of stalls, all sorts of stuff. It was good to go to when I lived in Manchester, but I don't know if its exactly worth going all the way up for. You know how these things work, they'll some good finds there but only if you want them anyway, and you'r scratching at the door to get in - which will take some dedication, coming all the way from London.
You could always just stay at home, save petrol/train fairs/time, and buy at inflated prices from the couple of people, maybe even on this forum, who go there to buy up and sell on.

how much is it in?

While we're on the subject the cheapest place I've found remotely close to the velodrome in Manchester is £28 a night...anyone know any other places?

... dunno, about a fiver?
It was Rob Hayles' ex-wrestling dad hawking his gear. Including the parts that became this piece of Nasty work.

i have never been but if you want a good frame the only way is with a seller ; herne hill proved that!

It's crap, I wouldn't bother going!

i've been to manchester velodrome a few time to watch the racing, the track is only 250m so the middle of the track is'nt that big.if the stalls fill the middle, like the guy in any early thread stated, i don't think have that many stalls and it's along way to go.

Hatters hostel is just off piccadily gardens, short distance to sport city and the velodrome. will set you back about 15 a night i think. i spent two months there, good people... (youll find it in google of course). Also Hilton Chambers is just round the corner, slightly more upmarket hostel. go on and have some fun...

probably only worth the trip if you are definitely going to splash wonga on a lot of stuff, or if you need a frame and wheels..big stuff at low prices..otherwise like JC said, the train fares/fuel and all that makes it a little silly.
the way the hipster scene has caused prices to inflate in the last two years on track parts makes me sick. like nitto stuff now being double the price, fucking pain in the arse for track racers on a budget who are still using older bikes with threaded steerers.

Spent enough on bikes already this year, and we're only two weeks in.
So I'll give Manchester a miss this time. Hopefully there's another one later in the year.
Thanks for the helpful information.
Here's a tentative list of other 2009 jumbles: http://www.campyoldy.co.uk/events.htm

£70 a nitto jaguar stem is a fucking joke

agreed, but with new nitto stuff, there's also the exchange rate to consider - the yen is 25% more expensive than a year or two ago

Yeah, it'll be rubbish. Manchester? Bound to be raining. I wouldn't go all that way for a load of old tat. No, better off riding your bike that day. It's in February is it not?

The pound has also become incredibly shit against the american dollar, further pushing prices up.
It's not just fixed wheel stuff that's gone up in price, most things have...e.g. all new Trek bikes are at least £50 more expensive for 2009.
There was also apparently a big price increase in the price of steel last year...but i could be wrong about that...chinese whispers, you know. -

Thanks for the info. Is there any point in booking or should I just turn up and check in?

I'm thinking of popping over from Liverpool. Does anyone know of anyone who has a stall so I could possibly get in early to have a mooch and get dibs on stuff if there is anything good? Still a bit dubious abot going but it can't hurt. Does anyone know of any good bike shops open on a Sunday in Manchester too?

Sunday, 18 January 2009, 11am - 4pm
Has anyone every been to a Manchester jumble?
Is it worth taking a day or overnight trip for?
How's it compare in size to Herne Hill?
Indoors or out?
Etc...
