quick fix solution: take off all the gear shifters, cables etc... line up the chain from the inner chainring to one of the smaller cogs on the wheel, shorten the chain so its the right length and bobs your uncle! if you're going single speed that is... you can take off the cogs off the back wheel, put on a bmx freewheel, respace the axle and re-dish the wheel, but thats another story. better to buy a new back wheel maybe?
