Did you fall off the first time you tried clipless pedals?

  • 1st time yes.... fell off at red light on my BMC team machine.... trying to wait for green light.... drive side cleat clipped the front tire....

  • First time I tried clipless I chose my route very carefully (it was basically a big left hand circle and involved no junction where I would have to stop). However, the bike wasn't in "fixed mode". I'm sweating big time on trying it on "fixed mode". The Keo's and cleats are new and my foot just won't come out that easy, when it does, if the cleat touches the floor, it doesn't grip, nightmare!!! The guy in the bike shop thought I was mad when I bought them!!

  • ive been lucky and not fell over due to being clipped in, but I did recently walk into a lamp post which made a comedy clang as my head connected with it, Ive never seen someone laugh as hard as the guy that saw me do it.

  • I'm pretty sure I've seen lots of user reviews about those and they werent impressed.

oh yeah? what'd they say? where'd you find them? couldn't find any reviews on bikeradar, etc?

Can't find the place now but someone on some forum was wondering why Sidi still has them on sale as he said they don't really work and have lots of problems. Could've been bikeforums.net, not sure.

Tried googlin but didn't find anything negative really.

Sorry for the delay, been bit busy for few days :P

  • On my first go with Look pedals...i fell on the 2nd outing and thereafter was far from confident with them but with SPD or Eggbeaters never fell...though unclipped at 'speed' with the eggbeaters....so i tried Look again and fell first time.....so i banished the Look pedals for ever and am back with SPD but never tried clips with a fixie...yet...will try that in the spring.

  • ^ Time ATAC for fucks sake

  • first time out with looks, stopped to talk to a mate and didn't un-clip quick enough. just fell over. It took a while for me to live that one down.

  • Time ATAC indeed. They are freekin awsome!!!

  • first day-out on clipless, i stacked it right on front of a local girls school, as they all came out of the school gates. NAGL. learnt from it and haven't fallen off since.

  • Never fallen due to pedals, although did come close when I used to ride some old Look road pedals that had about 0.1 degree of lateral float. I find it's more likely to be the opposite problem with SPDs. Maybe I need to try these ATACs that seem so pop'lar.

  • Not the first time but the first time something genuinly complicated happened... cycling along and needed to turn right across a busy stream of traffic slowed and pulled to the side waiting for a break went to put my foot down and bam people outside a pub laughing at me

I'm impressed with the time atac love here, normally they are spd's obscure cousin. I'm rocking the time atac xs carbons atm

  • Still do :)

  • i used to ride without straps and all, but definitely hurt myself quite often. granted landed myself in hospital partially because of them, I still feel safer with them though. always.

  • shimano 920 spd, never looked back, if fact dont like riding without them.

  • Yes. but not because of clipping/unclipping issues. I put my foot down after my ride and slid on the plastic cleat........

  • Full roll to port ending up on my side infront of a hoard of peds waiting to cross the Charing Cross rd.

    Toodle pip

  • A few decades ago I borrowed my brothers bike to pop to the off licience, and then to see a man about a dog (well buy some grass).
He had the metal bits to thread straps through (although no straps).
Leaving the off licience, I relised I had no bag for my fourpack of bottled pilsner. I could'nt be bothered to go back, so I carried the beer under my arm and cycled off. Thinking this was is a bit stupid and unsafe, I slowed right down. Then while cutting through the school I hit a speed bump, and the bike stopped due to my lack of speed....

    Tilt
    Topple
    Panick
    Smash
    Ouch

...and there I was lying in a pool of blood and beer.
    Idiot!

  • just got me some TIME's
rolled out for a trial last night.
    all good.
can't see what the fuss is about.
    (the falling that is...)
bound to happen now though eh ?

  • First day out clipless today, everything was going terribly smoothly, unclipping going fine all the way, untill i was literally 20 feet from my front door and some bint pulls in front of me signalling left so i drop back and slow down to let her turn, but she does the same, we both slow to an almost halt wating for the other to move, I start to wobble a bit (currently i cant trackstand for shit, but am working on it), and then ultimate unclip fail, and curb dive, into a laughing heap, much to the alarm of woman in car.

    better luck tomorrow hey... :)

  • Oh yes! Especially as be tried them first on our tandem - luckily found a grass bank to fall onto rather than breaking summat!

  • If people are still feeling pretty uncertain of decking it with clips, try multirelease cleats. Don't try to trick at all or skid too much in them, but it means you can pull your feet out backwards or upwards to release as well as side to side. Not as secure AT ALL, but give you a good feeling of the clipless (stupid fucking name) system, with a lot more chance to unclip easily.

I never tried them cause I'm fucking hardcore and dent tarmac when I hit it, but you know.

  • I have to say, despite the curb plant outside my front door, i am already totally loving the clipless shizzle, so so so much more comfy than clips (which ive always hated)

  • first time out with looks, stopped to talk to a mate and didn't un-clip quick enough. just fell over. It took a while for me to live that one down.

I just did exactly the same thing. First time on clipless, ride to meet my mate, stop and fall over. It took me two stops (and two falls) to realise I find it much easier to unclip the left first.
