I've got one of the Bern snowboard helmets that im using at the mo whilst London does a good impression of the arctic.
On the whole im dead chuffed, keeps the bonce nice and toasty - gets a bit too warm after a while but im only going to use it when it's super cold. Can do the 40 min ride to work and it doesn't get uncomfortable. Visibility is fine.
Wouldn't want to use it in even mildly warm conditions as you would sweat like a bad boy in it.
Not sure if id buy one just for the cold tho - i got mine for free anyway =) Still if you snowboard and cycle in the winter then its not a bad choice, imo.
Granted it is only a hard hat (much less legislation to get a hard hat as opposed to a helmet on the market = cheaper but less protection) so wouldn't do a great deal in a big smash. However the other alternative was to ride with a beanie and no helmet...
They were intended for snowboarders and skiers would ride park a lot and whack their head occasionally. A proper helmet would be a bit soft and get damaged easily but protect the noggin from a big stack, a hard hat is literally that...whack it 'softly' and its fine however one big slam and you might come out a bit worse for wear...
If anyone was interested in getting one...Method Snowboard magazine are selling ones for 90Euros go here if you wanna check it out.
