Cycle clothes: the new look

i found this 1940s picture of fausto coppi (fausto on the left, his bro serge on the right) on the net recently and i'm a little bit obsessed with it. how fucking dapper are these chaps?!! plus fours and argyle jumpers FOR THE GODDAMN WIN!!!!

and this pic is so ace... it's from a north cotswalds cycle club run from 1937. pure style. check out fiddy in his youth, second from the left, working that tie!

these gents just know how to dress. i figure we never get to wear a tie for work, and i'm holding out for a big comeback for this tie-and-plus-fours-on-the-weekend look. it's the hipster look for 2009, trust me on this one.

seriously, i'm all about old school cycling clothes. fuck the rapha softshell, i've just ordered my 1935 worthy suedette zip jacket...

They knew that jeans are not the best thing to ride in.. woolie clothes ARE.
You will also be needing either a beret or a fine-toothed comb 'ForTheWind'.
EDIT - I think the 'alpaca jacket' will make a comeback aswell.

Tweed is fantastic. Keeps you dry on shorter runs, such as a commute, dries fairly quickly, keeps you warm, feels great on.

Does anyone have any experience of buying tweed gear online?

I did a bit of research into getting some breeks a while ago and found a few places:

Most of this stuff is designed for fat-arsed pheasant eaters so it doesn't have the slimline cut of the rapha tweed detail breeks (which are mostly lycra, anyway) but there must be somebody out there that offers a happy medium.

Teddy - there's a place in Putney that sells tweed and moleskin breeks/plusfours and proper hunting socks [nice and cheap as well]

I make tweed and wool cycling caps. Lined with silk. I'm in the middle of setting up a website. But if there is interest I can post some pictures on here. I have some of the Dashing Tweed lumatwill too.

These are ones I have made up at moment. The pink is a silk lining.
All are natural fabrics. I never use synthetic crap.
I'm also doing some winter ones with a merino wool band. Cheaper & warmer than R*pha.

Those are really nice Mr Bonk. Do you plan to sell them just via your website?... I can think of plenty of London shops that would like to stock those

Thanks Nick. No, I'm looking at selling in shops too. I've been in contact with Tour de Ville and Sargent & Co. Both seem keen. If you know anywhere else, I'd really appreciate some names.

I've got about 20 which are for sale now. I'm just building up some stock. If anyone wants one I'd happily email pics, if you tell me what colours etc you're in to. Or I can custom make them to suit. I'm in north London, in fact very north London. 34 stops on the M1 line. Sheffield. Easy to post though.
